Glad you were uninjured. Amazing to see the damage on the other car with a complete crushing of the hood compared to the Rivian.
Personally, I'd rather be in a vehicle that crumples up. That's where I want crash energy going....into the vehicle instead of into the occupants.

ICE cars don’t usually have as much crumple zone as electric cars as they have to divert the engine downward to keep it out of the cab.

It seems if the guy really ran a red light and it's 100% at fault that you should be able to negotiate with the guys insurance company for replacement of the vehicle. That is not what you paid for it or what it's worth but what you need to get you into the same or equivalent vehicle now. The basic insurance he has we cover the cost of the current vehicle's value but then the negotiation begins about pain l, suffering, inconvenience, and replacing your vehicle with a new equivalent

I pay Allstate an additional $12 a month for "Full Replacement Value" if my vehicle is totaled in the first two years of ownership to ensure that I could afford to replace my R1S Quad. Since I bought it under the initial pricing, I believe a new Quad (when they're even available) would be $30K-$40K more than I paid.

Hopefully your insurance company will fight his on your behalf to have you made whole.
Good luck!

Yea I pay that too. I think that would be in case of our fault or no fault and this case would be his insurance company like you said.

Yeah - My biggest fear is a deer strike totaling my car. The $12 a month allows me to drive this time of year in PA and NY without stressing too much.

It's ending soon for me though. I think Allstate said they only offer the coverage for the first two years of ownership.

There is absolutely no doubt that the OP's vehicle is Totaled. If a soccer ball size dent in the rear quarter panel is a $42,000 Rivian repair, this damage would be $300K to repair.

You pretty much always want to claim through your own insurance, especially if you have a fairly high value vehicle and are hit by something much cheaper whose owner likely carries equivalently lower insurance. Your insurance will pay out in compliance with your coverage and then deal with the other company to reimburse them. If you have full car replacement coverage this is absolutely the way to go.

Yes - that's how I understand it as well. It makes sense, but I will miss that coverage beginning in August 2025 for us. Just watch your premium to make sure it does drop...

As others have said, all depends on your insurance. 1st R1S (2018 order at $83K) was totaled. Insurance paid price of new R1S at full value (no early adopter discount) plus all taxes and insurance. Close to $113K if I remember correctly.

Had Nationwide Private Client at the time. Standard Nationwide underwrites Rivian's insurance so that was a plus.

Also, not sure the R1T is totaled. Fingers crossed or fight for diminished value claim.

complete crushing of the hood compared to the Rivian.
That’s what ~8000 pounds gets you. It’s like hitting a tree.

The sedan had moderately severe damage. Presuming it has breakaway motor mounts, I’d call that fully severe had it dropped out. Everything other than the motor was severely damaged, not just the hood

This illustrates the arms race in cars, where you have to drive a big car to be safe from other big cars.
FWIW- My 1976 Jeep CJ-7 weighed 2,500lbs.. my 2024 Jeep Wrangler weighs in at 5,100lbs.

Some of the small sports cars I drove back in the 1980's wouldn't stand a chance against a modern car in a crash. Those cars weighed 1,900lbs (Fiat X/19), 2,100lbs (TR7) and 1,600lbs (MG Midget) and are just tiny compared to modern vehicles.
