That looks fantastic. Nice job. Do you have any interest in posting a more detailed write-up on how you connected the boards?

Also, do you think Luxury Vinyl Plank flooring would be an option? It is really light and water/scratch resistant.

Thanks!

I made a PVC cover before and it was functional, but I didn't like the look. I just finished my new cover. It might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I love it :)

It's unique for sure. Honestly takes me back to when Jeep used to have the wood side panels as a youngster.

The Plank flooring might work, if it is long enough (54.5" - 54.75"). I saw some at Costco yesterday, but it was all 48". I have ordered some fence panels, which are are lot more expensive than flooring, but should be more weather resistant in the long run.

Are you talking about vinyl plank? Vinyl won't work, it's not stiff enough, it will just fall inside the bed.

It's very light. You can easily hold each panel with one hand. I'm using 3/4" select pine from Home Depot. I think cedar would have been a better choice, but I used up all of mine on other projects. Here are some detailed pictures. Hope that helps explain things. The last panel has an aluminum L panel as a handle to pull it out.

This looks great, thanks for the idea. What dimensions were your boards? I'd go measure but my truck is in the service center.

16 3/4" x 54 3/4"
18 1/2" x 54 3/4"
18 1/2" x 54 3/4"
You also need to trim the edges to 1/2" thick and 1 1/4" deep to fit the bed tracks.

I built a shower in my Sprinter van using 1/4 inch marine mahogany plywood. I coated the plywood with 3 layers of clear epoxy resin. 7 years and lots of use and the shower walls look new. Clear epoxy is expensive but very durable. I'm not sure how the wood and epoxy would hold up to UV exposure but I think it would last longer then polyurethane. I love the look of your cover and if my manual Rivian cover should ever fail I will follow your lead and make my own. I think it would be very easy to slot the sides of each panel and add a 1/8 inch flanged "D" shaped weather strip to seal out water. It will be interesting to see how your solid wood holds up to the weather, UV, and heat changes. Maybe a marine plywood would work better but not sure. For the record I have been using my manual Rivian cover for 7 months and it has held up perfectly to my abuse. No breaks, no bends, no latch failures. I do keep the slides on both the cover and the truck clean and spray silicon lubricant on the latch and guides when ever I feel them binding.
