Sounds like it’s not for you based upon the laundry list of perceived issues. Time to stop analyzing and move on.

Have to agree that OP is trying to justify not purchasing a Rivian. Probably not the correct vehicle for him.

Doesn't matter, they'll give you a loaner/rental.
Yep. I was just saying he folks be without his car. They are good with loaners. But, to be fair, it’s a bit of a pain to have to deal with a loaner for extended period of time.

Again, it’s some pain, but you need to expect that with a startup.

@OP - Rivian is not for you and I don’t blame you. I ordered a Gen 2 R1S large and I was told my vehicle won’t start production until October 1. Rivian has about 2 months to figure out all these bugs and issues I am reading about impacting Gen2, otherwise, I will cancel. I could care less about losing my deposit. Honestly, based on what I am reading, I think Rivian is becoming a trash product and unlike some folks here I cannot tolerate waiting weeks and months to have things repaired.

Perhaps you should wait for BMW to push out PHEV or EV version of the X7. I drive the iX and it is almost perfect. It just doesn’t have a third row. Zero issues, A/C works beautifully, it stays cool in hot weather despite having a fixed glass roof, it’s super quiet, the ride quality is smooth, the fit and finish is solid, the panels are all aligned, and if I need to get it serviced, I can go to one of the many dealerships that are 10-20 miles away from me.
Your entire post is trash. No personal experience with the vehicle and yet you think it's trash based on....?? Unfortunately, this is what the internet has become. YOU!!!

I back to my trailer with the suspension in kneel mode. Then when it's in place, I set the suspension to standard, lifting the truck to the trailer hitch and removing the need to jack the trailer.

I find service to be quite accommodating, and have had minimal issues. Who wouldn’t love quicker service, but never been a negative for me in Denver

With no personal experience with a Rivian, calling it a trash product is laughable. I've owned multiple BMWs and I own a Rivian. In the first year I have had 0 service events or issues with my Rivian. That beats my experience with the BMWs I bought new. So based on my actual experience with both brands and your rational, BMW is trash.

This kind of post has been around as long as there have been forums (and before forums bulletin boards) and I’ve never understood it.

If you think X is great and Y is trash that’s fine. Why not just hang out in the X discussion groups and sing kumbaya? The instinct in many to instead prefer trolling Y discussion groups is really pathological.

I've been wanting a Rivian for a couple of years and seriously considering for a few months now. I've been lurking around here, Reddit, and watching a ton of YouTube videos. I compiled a list of fairly important items that I thought I'd post to see whether things I've read about have been resolved, or to flag for Rivian corporate what's between me and dropping $100k on one of their cars.

Important issues to me:
  • Ride height adjustment can life up while trying to hook up trailer (safety concern)
  • Infotainment maps sub par compared to Apple/Google. I navigate all the time and expect very accurate directions, POIs, traffic, offline downloads, etc.
  • No vehicle to load adapter
    • The idea of plugging into one of those solar chargers as an intermediary may alleviate this concern
  • No native NACS and adapters not readily available
  • Want more aggressive regen and less friction brakes
    • I will be taking it on a lot of mountain roads and getting the most out of regen is big. I have a Polestar 2 currently and the friction brakes virtually never get used and the blending of regen and friction is so seamless I'm surprised Rivian is noted as being so aggressive on the friction brakes
  • Apple Music costs more and needs a special subscription
  • Gen 2 AC/Heat pump is loud/vibrating
  • No native way to use text messages through infotainment (kind of a safety issue here too)
  • Service time is very long
  • Demo drive times are poor
    • I live in the greater DFW area currently and the service center has no demo drives on the weekends?? How's a working person supposed to get over there without taking time of of work. I shouldn't have to take time off of work (the latest appointment is 6:15 pm, which can mean leaving work early if you know DFW traffic).
Annoyances but not critical:
  • The support site is so lean on details about the car. Interior dimensions, battery statistics, etc.
  • Disabled blind spot monitoring while trailering.
  • Autonomy driving has been described as that it kind of bounces between the lane rather than staying centered (or ideally Manual Lane Biasing like Lucid)
  • Limited interior pictures compared to competitors (which have, e.g. 3D views)
  • Website is not clear at all what the difference between "Adventure" and "Ascend" is.
  • I'd like to see the company profitable so that I know there's some longevity to the brand. I'm willing to take a risk on the brand, but would want to see the product itself move past the "beta" phase since it's a generation 2 premium product commanding a premium price tag.
I have a R1T Dual Motor Performance Max Pack. After 7 months of ownership, 14742 miles of driving through all of the western states, with 9000 mi of that towing an 8000 lb Airstream, I share none of your concerns. With due respect, many of your issues are simply not factual. This truck is amazing, and I certainly wouldn’t call it ‘beta’. OK, I’m still waiting on a NACS adapter, but that hasn’t inhibited our travels at all. Take a test drive to resolve your questions and form your own opinions. And don’t text while driving!

We plan to keep more vehicles than drivers -- but partly for tax reasons.

R1S MaxPack: Our most expensive, mostly my work vehicle with some shared trips into the I-5 corridor.

R1T Large Pack: Next most expensive, mostly my wife's work vehicle (her choice).

Bolt: Personal trips, unless they're long enough to need the Rivian's range or charging speed.

***

Living 2.5 hours from a Service Center, we are aware that a third vehicle eases the time pressure if the Rivians have problems -- but that wasn't our main reason for wanting to keep the third vehicle.

I hope this helps!

When hitching up a trailer, just turn off auto height adjustment. It's what I do when hooking up my RV (set drive height I want, then turn off Auto. Bing bang boom, all good). And once the trailer power cord is plugged in, towing mode should kick in and height should stay the same.
I do just the opposite with my Jeep.....I use the air suspension system to raise the tow ball into the trailer, which makes hooking it up incredibly easy. It also helps that the rear camera gives a perfect view to do this from the driver's seat. I'm surprised more people don't use their air suspension this way.

.... IMHO getting injured or killed in a car accident is almost completely avoidable with the biggest vehicle you can own and avoiding major highways with 18 wheelers (I use flyover in my area where trucks aren't allowed).....
That's an interesting opinion. I guess the laws of physics always apply, but rather than have a bigger & heavier vehicle to increase my odds in a collision, I'd rather have a nimble performance-oriented car to avoid those collisions in the first place. You know, something with excellent handing and braking that will keep the rubber side down when making crazy emergency maneuvers to avoid a catastrophe in the first place.
