RJ is full of it. My Tri in conserve doesn't touch the nearly 3mi/khw it would take to go 400 miles. That is driving 60 mph on a state highway in the country's flattest state (Illinois). That being said it does get much better efficiency than either of my QM did in conserve.
What would you say is more realistic? In my Gen 2 dual (during current, cold winter conditions I'll see mid 2s on the highway)

Sandy says a lot of things with great conviction and certainty. The things about vehicle costs and engineering trade-offs are things I do not know about so he seems credible. OTOH, with respect to things I DO know about, Sandy is totally FOS. He says in this video that "most oil goes to plastics" which is idiotic (plastics mostly use methane as a feedstock). FTR Plastics accounts for around 6% of oil usage despite both China and the Saudis pushing hard to move to more oil to plastics. His comments about the canadian pipeline are equally ignorant.

All of which makes me wonder if the other things he says are equally FOS. Hmm...

Interesting RJ drives in conserve mode (around 9 minute mark) - anyone with Tri-motor know what the impact on the longevity of front tires?
He explained the difference. The dual motors do not have conserve as the rear motors switch in and out based on power requirements. The Tri, and I assume the new quad, have a conserve mode because the standard mode keeps the rear engaged all the time. When they switch to conserve mode it behaves like the dual motors where the rear wheels switch in and out. The difference in the G1 quad is conserve just disconnects the rear and does not use it at all.

Why does the stance of the R1T behind Sandy look correct? Kneel mode?? The rear stance seems to match the front! How do I get mine to stance correctly in Sport or deflate mode. My rear wheel gap is always more than the front.
Maybe Low vs Lowest?

Yeah, that comment about petroleum and plastics was whack! RJ, slightly confused, just smiled and said nothing. 🤣

They could easily adjust the conserve mode on the Gen1 quad to engage the rears with sufficient demand. Then again, it might reduce demand people wanting to upgrade on the Gen2's. My trucks in conserve mode less than 10% of the time anyway for the very reason that won't engage the front when I want more power. They could easily set a parameter that at a 60 or 70% demand for power, it engages the rear.

I do not think they can, I’m pretty sure they physically modified how the clutches on the disconnect works to enable it to work under various loads.

Edit, this was from one of the Rivian Stories they sent out;

Performance Dual-Motor also offers a suite of standard drive modes: Towing, All-Terrain, Snow, and for everyday driving, All-Purpose.

In All-Purpose mode, when optimal conditions are detected, the system defaults to front-wheel drive to maximize range. When accelerating heavily or when a loss of traction is detected, the system automatically engages All-Wheel Drive. This is achieved with new rear-axle disconnect hardware. In All-Terrain, Snow, Tow and Sport modes, All-Wheel Drive is always engaged for performance and safety.

I could not find a hard statistic on percentage of plastic from crude, mainly because plastics are not derived directly from crude. Or something like that. But from what I found, the percentage is less than 10%. What is he thinking? His comments on the Canadian pipeline were just plain whacky. I thought that he endorses EV’s. Maybe he should watch some of Ben Sullin’s YouTube videos?

Maybe I'll have to watch again.

I don't think he said "most oil goes to making plastics." I heard (or at least interpreted) what he said as being "most plastics are made from petroleum." So it's important that we continue to have oil for that purpose.

A quick Google search seems to validate that assertion.

Either way, Sandy knows his stuff when it comes to vehicle production and, obviously, Rivian took his previous videos to heart when moving to Gen 2. I enjoyed this video though it was at times a bit slow.
