So would the idea be to have a 20MM ball there instead of 17MM? I could potentially scale it to 20MM and 3D print one to send for testing.

To take advantage of a myriad of mounts and fixtures out there, I think 20mm would be a good size. I ordered both your 1" and 17mm to try them out in various configurations to see what works best for me.

So, I have sent back the Magbak mount as over time it was pulling back from the screen making it a hassle to get the phone to grab on to it. I tried the Mouse, Rebel and even the MagBak case, and none of them worked satisfactory. And by that I mean, I want to get in the car, move my phone to the mount and stick it on in one go, like any other magsafe accessory I have used. That was not the case anymore, so, onto the next idea...

@RWerksman, I ordered a few things from you the other day, including both the 17mm and 20mm mounts. I am planning to use your 17mm mount with this: https://www.arkon.com/product/SP-SB-AMPS-KIT-adapter-head-amps-pattern.html

I am thinking of using that plate, with this charger: https://magbak.com/products/magbak-charger-car-kit

I know this is starting to be a hodgepodge of parts to get to an elegant AND functional design, but I feel like it just might work.

I am willing to pay for the charger and plate and ship them to you, so you can test it out, as you may have to optimize your ball location for it?

Worst case we return the charger if it doesn't work.

PM me if you are interested.

This might not work for everyone but it works well here since there is no where else flat enough to suction

Basically the same as @2020 method

Aluminum angle iron. 3m VHB double sided tape. Amazon MagSafe sticky mount. Wedged under dash. Steering wheel doesn’t block the view.

I decided to take the magback case off. Switched to the spigen mount with the riviparts mount (17 mm).

Height is better. Wish I could better manage the cable though (with all the mounts)

Alright, got the 1in ball mount in (Thanks @RWerksman) and I think this is a pretty decent setup for a non-iphone user currently. I've never used RAM mounts before and I'm already not a fan. I've always been a proclip user for all my phones / vehicles so I'm excited what they'll eventually have to offer, but for our first road trip I think this will work fine.

https://rammount.com/products/ram-hol-un7bu
https://rammount.com/products/ram-b-201u

Also, at around $80 delivered + the cost of the printed 1in ball mount, it's also pretty pricey.

That being said, the height for the phone is perfect. I can see the GPS speed on google maps and each turn by turn directions, which is all I really want. It's also fairly stable which is as much as I can ask for.

Just including another option to this thread. I have always used windshield phone mounts, so I was content finding a solution that just mounted to the windshield. As another member pointed out, Quad Lock sells a really nice mag safe iPhone windshield mount with a gimbal for lots of angles (as well as phone mounts for many other smart phones). So I purchased that with an iPhone 14 Pro Max Case. Spray painted the back side blue rubber of the windshield mount a matte black so it looks nicer from the outside looking in through the windshield. Then used a Uni-bit to drill a small hole in the under panel just above the 12V socket to run the wire inside the dash area. Dropped the left side dash panel and the drivers under panels to run the wire (couple T25 screws and mostly snap clips) and about half of the entire under dash panel (on the drivers side) to run the wire. BTW-You cannot see the 12V USB power adapter or the wire curling up into the dash unless you get floor level. I did not have to remove the A-Pillar with has one-time clips, you can easily wedge the cable in between the dash and A-Pillar and it works great. The phone easily/magnetically holds to the mount and charges in one step and doesn’t block any of the screens. I enjoy reading all the other posts and thank the community members for sharing. All ideas are awesome!

Now, there are two ways to do this with the part listed below.
  • The easiest way is to use one cable (Amazon link below) that is a USB-A to USC-C with 90° connector and the 12V USB power supply.
  • The harder way is to use a USB-A to Lighting cable (from Apple store / in black) and then an adapter and 90° USB-C fitting enclosed in heat shrink tubbing.
I choose the 2nd way because I like to have back-up plans. Should the Quad Lock mag-charger fail, I can plug the Lighting cable directly into the bottom of the phone and still charger and/or charge at a much faster rate if needed.

Easy Way:

Anker 24W 12V USB Power Supply

- or – (which gives you Lighting capability still)

Thank you @LLJJ for the idea! If you have a MagBak case, The MagBak Tesla mount works really well! I don’t think I will even need to use the adhesive as it is pretty rock solid once I fit it behind the screen.
I love MagBak because their magnets are crazy sting and the phone just sticks there with no concern of it falling.

Is your mount still working? I saw someone else said it was pulling away from the screen.

Received the parts I needed today. Wireless charger from Peak Design and mount from Riviparts. I just cut the 17mm ball from the mount and stuck the charger mount onto it. Works great. The phone doesn't sit super high up which is fine with me. Some might prefer a more full view of the phone screen. I'm happy with it.

Pardon my ignorance here, but what is the difference between this cable and your standard run of the mill Iphone charging cable?

Functionally, nothing.

The mophie cable is black (for aesthetics), lighting certified and wrapped in durable braided nylon which I have found last longer when exposed to direct sunlight. After years of running iPhone cables to windshield mounts in many of my vehicles, I have found that the standard apple lighting cable exterior cover deteriorates pretty quickly in lots of direct sunlight, which I have where I live. The mophie cable last longer and looks better IMO.

I also used the riviparts mount. Since I have an android, magsafe isn't an option so I needed a different wireless charging option. After some trial and error I found the "joyroom" (https://a.co/d/2wNA8de) auto clamping wireless mount. It sits high enough to not interfere with any controls. Some of the similar options sit much lower or stick out too far and get in the way. The steering wheel still blocks some of the view but it works well and is good for using Waze as a complement to the built in nav. The auto clamping is really convenient.

looks good. FYI, for other people, you can get a gel case with magnet ring for android phones. Work perfect and very strong on magsafe chargers.

+1 RiviParts ball mount and Spigen OneTap Pro (powered) vent mount to get the raised position in this video. I used a 12v car to usb-c adapter to connect the power. Quick and easy, but the cable is not hidden.
