I'm prepping for the delivery of the 2025 running boards. Looking through this thread, it seems like there are two basic installation options:

1) Cut out 4" holes in situ and install the brackets without having to remove the trim; or

2) Take off the trim and cut out t-slots after during the installation (or leave the panels off completely).

Seems like cutting the slots is way more involved, and the lazy side of me just says "get the hole saw bit and drill out the panels." I wanted to see if anyone went that route and then regretted it for whatever reason.

Also, it seems a 4" bit is recommended, but I can also get bits ranging from 3" to 3.75". Does anyone happen to know the smallest bit size that works and still allows easy installation of the brackets and torquing of the bolts?

Yes, basics covered. Or...if you can wait until March, we have a new bolt-on cover coming to market....so you could pull the plastic off entirely for now...and bolt on our new covers

Do we have any range tests done with and without the boards at city speeds and highway speeds? Casual search results say "no noticeable impact". Would be good if someone has data to share.

no loss of range. We have been selling these for years, never an issue with ours and range loss.

Looking forward to this. For my r1t I did the circular holes, but for the R1S I took the covers off.

I did the 4 inch holes on my R1S, it has almost been a year since I installed them and have no regrets. I did not notice any efficiency drop adding them, I did pickup some 6 inch wide weather tape to cover the open areas but after driving it around for a bit I never used it.

When I did the install I took my time and triple measured before cutting the holes. Even taking my time it was only about 1.5 hours doing it in the drive. Just raised suspension to highest level, no need to jack anything up and was able to do it by myself, did not need a helper.

Just note to ensure you have a TP (Torx Plus) bit as a Torx bit will strip the bolt heads.

My 2025 Gen 2 R1T running boards are being delivered this afternoon. Where can I download the latest 4" hole cutting templates? Website hasn't update the templates for the new 2025 R1T running boards. Thanks!
