Hello Rivian owners,

1744565815858-5k.jpg

We’re beyond excited to introduce ourselves here! Mars Adventure Gear is a fast-growing, California-based brand founded in April 2024 by a group of outdoor enthusiasts and EV industry engineers. Frustrated by the lack of thoughtfully designed gear for electric vehicles, we decided to build our own. Our mission is simple: to make electric camping, off-roading, and overlanding more enjoyable and accessible. That’s why every Mars product is crafted with premium materials, sleek and functional design (often with no exposed bolts), and a low-profile, stealthy aesthetic engineered for optimal aerodynamic performance.

We’ve built an extensive lineup for the Tesla Cybertruck platform, and after adding three Rivians to our fleet—and months of testing and development—we’re thrilled to unveil our first Rivian-specific products: the Mars Expedition Rack for the R1S and R1T.

Yes sir. We use the OEM mounting points for the bed rack, and the crossbars can be easily removed with just a few nuts.

Depends which RTT and what hardware they come with. Some are more elaborate. Some are more crude: bolts/nuts and flat bar or u-bolts. There is an outfit that sells CNC mounts specific to iKamper Skycamp Mini and Rivian crossbar: https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/threads/rtt-mounts-from-wheel-every-weekend.14699/

Various RTTs have been bought and shared in the forums. The one that fits the best over R1T's bed and doesn't protrude much past the tailgate is the iKamper Skycamp Mini, which is essentially the same as the Rivian branded one featured in the Gear Shop (just different color ways and a few other details). Closed footprint is 57-½" x 54-¾".
The one that fits best is the Air Cruiser ;)

Closed footprint is 55" x 38" and it's only 10" in height so you can see the brake light.

you guys should do a collab with mars, or maybe provide a combo deal together!
We did reach out to them but haven’t followed up yet. We’ll reach out again — from what I’ve seen, it looks like they’re getting into rooftop tents too, mainly geared toward the Cybertruck. So there could still be an opportunity for us, especially with Rivian owners.

A few of our customers have used the Mars racks with the Air Cruiser on their Cybertrucks, and the fit seems to work well.

Their gear looks great — high quality and very slick. It’s good to have brands like that in the space.

But it's not a hard shell.
Yeah I personally prefer hard shell a lot except the fact that it's not as roomy. hardshell is just sooo much quicker to deploy and retract.

I also don't quite understand why rivian went with yakima for a softshell tent on R1S - that thing looks like it's gonna reduce range by a good 15% at least ..... it only makes sense for R1T

The typical prices for RTT, if I'm spending that much I want a hard shell. Plus, most likely scenario is to install and leave it installed, right? Fabrics will degrade and fade with that much exposure to the SoCal sun. If I'm spending that much, I want durability. If some outfit manage to make a air/hard-shell hybrid... then I'd be interested.

Yeah, and also I like the fact that their rtt has crossbars on top of it. You can still mount stuff like traction boards if needed. You lose that functionality with soft shell ones

Yeah, the Air Cruiser isn't a hardshell.

The hardshell doesn’t really make sense for the R1T, you struggle to get anything that fits the truck bed properly and the overhang is a big no no, for me anyway.

The Air Cruiser is so compact in pack size that you still have room on the cross bards for other gear such as traction boards

I personally don’t see what the fascination with a hard shell is, the advantages of the Air Cruiser/soft shells far out way the hard shell for me, especially on the R1T

You get so much more room, which personally for me, is the most important factor, I want to be able to sit up properly and use the cabin not just to sleep in.

Hardshells are also a lot more enclosed because of the shell forming part of the roof or wall, you don’t get that open and airy feeling that you get with a soft shell.

Don’t get me wrong, I think hard shells are a better match for certain vehicles and we sell a large variety of hard shell tents. We’re launching some incredible ones this season, one that is remote controlled set up with an opaque roof. One that gives you two floors! But there are some set ups where the soft shell just can’t be beaten and Rivian truck beds are one of them.

Another thing to mention is the Air Cruiser set up is as fast as any hard shell because you save time on the canopy set up, there are none to set up on the AC as they automatically deploy. One of our customers came from a hardshell and never used to leave site once set up because it was still a faff but he does with the Air Cruiser as it’s so much easier.

The big advantage for with a hard shell for me is aesthetically when packed down. A hard shell looks cooler but the flip side to that is you can never replace the hard shell, with a soft shell, any damage and you just get a replacement cover.

I feel like I’m hijacking a thread here so if anyone has any q’s. Just message and I’ll sign off and leave this for people to talk about the Mars adventure gear, which I can vouch for, our customers that have the racks, love them.
