If Tesla were to become a true monopoly where no other charging networks existed then they could literally charge whatever they wanted and be lackadaisical about maintaining/growing the sites.
We also would be subject to a being kicked off the network at the whim of Tesla's CEO. I have nightmares that the EV provisions in the bipartisan infrastructure bill and IRA will be targeted under the next administration which will make the competitive environment worse for Tesla's competitors.

It's going to distort the market if federal EV policy is under the unilateral control of Tesla's CEO.

Tesla superchargers have been maintained well with good uptime even before and after RAN started rollout.

RAN is so small and so few out there still that it makes no difference.
Any level 3 charger makes a difference. With the amount of deliveries by all mfgā€™s this is going to be the biggest issue in the next several years. Having 8 stalls (if lucky) every 150 miles in the midwest is not enough with the increased demand.

Since I started this threadā€¦.

the Rivian ā€˜Adventure Stationā€™ in Joshua Tree, CA is fully lit up and nears completion! Big sign on building says ā€˜Rivianā€™. Thatā€™s new for RANS! I canā€™t wait for opening day! Not sure why it isnā€™t on the map yet. May be a big announcement to say itā€™s available to non Rivian EVs too.

Side note. We went to Joshua Tree a couple days before Thanksgiving a few years ago and it was a complete zoo. However, with the truck and a charging station it could be a lot more fun

What does that have to do with supercharger access?
It's evidence that the CEO is at minimum complicit when the domestic EV market gets choked by the incoming administration. NEVI will be next and there will be even less capital available for charging network expansion.

If the supercharger network remains the dominant provider in the US, other manufacturers have to depend on it to sell EVs and Tesla will have leverage over them. I'm sure Ford et al. have protections against this built into their contracts, but these contracts will expire a some point.

We already saw a version of this take place when the GM access rollout was delayed after the purges at Tesla.

Got it. No basis for suggesting that Supercharger access will be shut off.

I never said it was imminent but that its dangerous if companies are completely dependent on Tesla's infrastructure, especially since Musk is so unpredictable. If you can't see that you've drunk the kool-aid.

Just FYI, Tesla doesnā€™t make supercharger stations these days much with just fewer than a dozen chargers. Thatā€™s what Rivian does.
