Yawn. A badge on the vehicle like some politicians who wear a flag pin and insist that others do, too? No thanks. Rivian should remain the adult in the room.
I disagree. Goal is sell trucks. I doubt many Americans rush to the Lincoln dealer to buy a Nautilus because they like it is made in China. Being American manufactured is still a selling point. And many assume I suspect due to styling...that the Rivian is not manufacturered in America.

I think you are getting confused by politics of the American Flag...which is absurd...but somehow many on one side have decided the American flag is bad.

They definitely do a lot of their own engineering but they seems to have a high percentage of foreign-made parts, like the battery, electronics, etc. Now this may change in time is Rivian can start to make money and I hope they do.

I was showing my R1S to a friend's father yesterday and he asked where it was made. When I told him Normal, IL he was a little surprised and assumed it was made somewhere outside the USA.

When I asked why, he didn't really have a reason he just didn't think USA first.
Made me wonder if Rivian should do a little more "American made/Made in USA" messaging and potentially even branding on every vehicle.

I have a boat made by Pursuit and they proudly label every one of their boats as "American Made" and include a monochrome American flag design on the transom it that's really cool.

Thoughts?
I've heard the same question/assumption. Your post spurred me to action. I've ordered one of these decals (there are several options Amazon) for the rear window.

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
Assembled in the USA of mostly Chinese electronics

Pray Trump is elected to try to bring it back home
This is a weird and largely incorrect take.

Gen2 uses Nvidia in all zones, which are designed in US and built in various TMSC factories (Taiwan) and Intel (US, Europe, Vietnam - though Intel is a 2nd-source). Almost all passive support circuitry is China-sourced - doesn't matter who you're buying (Ford, Caterpillar, Tesla, Rivian ... etc). There are other logic components which are significantly lower value which are China-sourced.

PCBs are manufactured wherever is cheapest, which means Mexico, China, Vietnam, Korea, and even the US, as well as a handful of other places.

Motors are built in the US. Bosch units are built in Germany. Controllers are unknown to me but likely sourced from China. I have no idea where they source their raw copper, but it probably comes from global sources, <10% of which is Chinese.

And as others have said, the software is (corrected) largely US with outposts in standard places like Eastern Europe, where there is extraordinary talent.

I'm not sure this is accurate. I'm pretty sure it's not helpful to other Rivian owners.

Most folks credit the "Inflation Reduction Act" with reversing the prior trend toward outsourcing manufacturing. We have a long way to go, though.

Best wishes!

Loved it. Decal is "designed in USA." Presumably the decal was made wherever it was cheapest to do so, even though it could have been made cheaply enough in the USA.

Of course, that's part of the problem....

I used to work for a large durable goods manufacturer that had a significant amount of product in the Walmarts. Every couple of years some genius in Bentonville would decide they needed to put a focus on products "Made in the USA" that included badging on the product or packaging, etc. as a marketing exercise to sell more product. Every time, we inevitably had to spend a ton of money on a new manufacturing die/stamp or packaging or something to fulfill the request and sales never increased, like, at all.

I get that a outdoor recreation product that costs under $100 at Walmart is a tough comparison to a high end vehicle purchase, but in my observational (and data driven) experience... the "buy american," "America first," "Made in America" crowd that has a strong overlap with the average Walmart shopper will happily buy cheap, poorly made junk from SE Asia (to be clear, I'm not saying that is all SE asia is capable of producing) if it saves them 85 cents at the register.

The IRA, Chips and Science Act, and Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act have all been driving investment into the US for the past 2-3 years, but it takes time to build/expand plants and update sourcing decisions. Despite this lead time, US manufacturing jobs have been growing for several years and are now at their highest level since 2008.
