Made in the USA?

I was showing my R1S to a friend's father yesterday and he asked where it was made. When I told him Normal, IL he was a little surprised and assumed it was made somewhere outside the USA.

When I asked why, he didn't really have a reason he just didn't think USA first.
Made me wonder if Rivian should do a little more "American made/Made in USA" messaging and potentially even branding on every vehicle.

I have a boat made by Pursuit and they proudly label every one of their boats as "American Made" and include a monochrome American flag design on the transom it that's really cool.

I agree they could do a bit more. I have been asked same question a few times. Mine has a small American flag I put on rear glass....

Like all automotive vehicle manufacturers functioning in a global economy, many components are out-sourced, from batteries, motors, wheels, suspension, electronics and more, and that includes Rivian.

Do we know what percentage of R1T/R1S are actually made in US? I couldn't immediately find an answer googling around.

It's not all made in the USA though it's more of an American company than Ford is at this point.

I'm not 100% sure on this but Cars.com says Rivian doesn't have to report it's parts content due to it having a GVWR over 8500lbs. https://www.cars.com/articles/2023-...ndex-which-cars-are-the-most-american-467465/

The term "Made in the USA" is regulated by the FTC. Not only can a final product be assembled in the USA but it's USA made content has to be very high (I don't know how much). Rivian's battery content isn't enough for it to even fully qualify for the $7500 federal tax credit. That battery is a very large part of the trucks content.

Yawn. A badge on the vehicle like some politicians who wear a flag pin and insist that others do, too? No thanks. Rivian should remain the adult in the room.

Gen 1 Bosch Motors are made in USA.

"Bosch on Tuesday announced the start of EV motor production at its Charleston, South Carolina, facility, with expansion plans already on deck for 2023.

Production began earlier this month in a 200,000-square-foot section of an existing building at the Charleston site, Bosch said in a press release. The assembly area includes production of motor rotors and stators—the main components—as well as final assembly of the motors, according to the company.

Bosch plans to add 75,000 square feet to this building in response to an uptick in business, and is spending $260 million on that addition, which is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2023."

Even though some of the computer parts come from China, the programming technology is 100% Rivian made in the USA. This technology is the most important part of the truck.
