the mid-range R1T pickup truck with a glass sky panel that can change from blue to clear was about $69,000. It can travel 300 miles on a full charge.
Electric vehicle maker Rivian: expect prices lower than previously announced

MILL VALLEY, California (Reuters) - Electric vehicle startup Rivian on Saturday displayed its pickup truck and SUV at an event in San Francisco’s Bay Area and said that when their prices are unveiled soon they will be lower than has been previously announced.

Rivian founder and chief executive R.J. Scaringe told Reuters the mid-range R1T pickup truck with a glass sky panel that can change from blue to clear was about $69,000. It can travel 300 miles on a full charge. A similar range R1S SUV will sell for about $72,000.

Rivian said the large battery could go 400 miles and the smallest could go 230 miles.

Scaringe declined to say how many prospective buyers have so far spent $1,000 on a refundable deposit to hold their spot for a Rivian, but he said the reaction had been “really positive”.

“So we’re excited by that. But we now have the challenge of a lot of pre-order customers aren’t going to get the cars as fast as they like because there’s such a long queue,” he said.

Rivian, founded in 2009, made waves when it unveiled its first prototype model at the LA Auto Show in 2018. It has raised $3.6 billion and counts Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O) and Ford Motor Co. (F.N) as investors.

Many customers at the event were excited about the designs, but Patrick Bonsi, who flew from New Jersey to see the vehicles, questioned whether Rivian would have a Tesla Supercharger-like charging network. He owns a Tesla (TSLA.O) Model 3.

“What I found with super charging is, if the Supercharger network is not made by the car company, it doesn’t charge the car as fast,” said Bonsi.

Scaringe said Rivian was working on rolling out a network of charging stations at key locations such as national parks, but that the vehicles can charge on most charging networks available today.

Brian Gase, Rivian chief engineer of special projects, and employee number four was busy showing customers the batteries, saying 7,776 of them were powering the pickup truck, and one was powering a flashlight that slides into the door, giving the car a lucky 7,777 batteries.

The first R1T trucks will be delivered starting at the end of this year, followed shortly after by the R1S SUVs, Scaringe said.

I just saw the same thing on Yahoo, maybe 2nd hand from Reuters.

For R1S, I was thinking it would be $85K for the 135 pack and fancy glass roof...

That certainly would be welcomed news but I get the sense this reporter may have gotten her notes slightly mixed up. Here is the first two paragraphs from the above article:

MILL VALLEY, California (Reuters) - Electric vehicle startup Rivian on Saturday displayed its pickup truck and SUV at an event in San Francisco's Bay Area and said that when their prices are unveiled soon they will be lower than has been previously announced.

The first paragraph states "when their prices are unveiled soon" which clearly indicates that they (new prices) have not been, yet the second paragraph indicates "mid-range R1T pickup truck ... was about $69,000." Well, which is it? Will the new price be soon or be revealed in the very next paragraph because the $69k has been the base price for the smallest battery pack (105 kWh) meaning NOT the mid-range which is the 135 kWh battery pack that is estimated to get 300 miles and has been speculated to be probably another $5 to $10k with the 180 kWh topping out at sub $90k (RJ's words from past interviews).

The ~$69k price for the mid-range truck was brought up shortly after the Cybertruck reveal I thought? Prior to that, I also expected the 135 kWh R1T with the electrochromic roof would be at least around $80k so this makes me very happy to hear again.

Hmm @EyeOnRivian, I wouldn't be surprised if you're correct. I've seen reporting that can't even get the "R1T" letters in the correct order. Also, if there was a price drop, wouldn't they want to about it to the world rather this one reporter? Nothing has been added to media.rivian.com, and the FAQ page still has same base pricing at $69k.

We'll soon learn the truth. This story has already being posted and reposted a few places online and Rivian will notice.

This is certainly great news! I would agree that the Cybertruck has some effect on the latest price update on the R1T.

Back in Sept last year at their Atlanta event, a representative told me firmly that a fully-loaded 135kW R1T similar to the silver one on display will be under $100K. It is only the 180kW model that will cost over $100K with various option packages.

Rivian will start under expected $69,000 price – Cybertruck effect in action?
https://flip.it/_Nq-7U Additional article to support calculations thus far for the price adjustment.

I'm thinking the most precise information we have is basically that a 135kWh with nice options like the electrochromatic roof, is about $69k - previously I assumed 69k was the base option with 105kWh.

So perhaps 135kWh without the fancy roof, etc., would be a few thousand less. This is moving the right direction for me :)

I wanted the mid-range truck so bad but it was exactly 10k too much to get the down payment I'll need in a reasonable amount of time. I wonder if they're worried about the Model Y launching two quarters early. That or a used Model S is what I had my eyes on. No longer.

Ok everyone here is an article with more specifics on pricing —— Rivian says its electric vehicles will cost less than first announced
https://flip.it/K6HKrH

It will be interesting if this will change one more time by the time the configurator gets published....

I'm not sure the Engadget article adds any new information.
The automaker had pegged the starting prices for the R1T and R1S at $61,500 and $65,000 respectively.
Emphasis on the "had". These numbers are just the original base prices ($69,000 and $72,500) minus the US Federal rebate of $7500.

That Electrek article though :like:
