Hi Folks,

Got the Gen2 R1T in September to replace our Honda Pilot because we were always using it for truck things and once we got our Model Y 7-seater it became the daily driver for our family of 5 when everyone needed to be in the car.

We love the T, but as the kids have gotten bigger even in the last year, the Model Y feels like it has an expiration date in the near future given all the sports and whatnot chauffeuring that is required. And in rural Maine every trip is at least 30min.

So, while I donā€™t really want to get another new vehicle so soon, I know I have a timeline to plan for. Would love an S, but want to hear from folks who have had both vehicles for regular family hauling and camping/trips, to get perspective.

I would also love to hear from folks who have owned Gen1 and 2 because it sounds like the ride is much better on Gen 2, but I would love to save money if I can get similar range on a used one (ideally Large or Max to have comparable or better range to our Y long range, since we opted for a standard T since we donā€™t need to haul things more than 80 miles or so generally, and knew it wouldnā€™t be the vehicle for long trips since itā€™s tight with all 5 of us in it).

Lots to consider, and not in a major rush, but just wanted to hear from people who have ideally spent some time with both vehicles for this purpose.

Thanks!

I have owned Model Y and we have an R1S.

itā€™s a significant upgrade. The suspension is better on Gen2 but software has improved Gen1 quite a bit. Gen1 is the best value right now unless you need the more advanced ADAS. There are some other goodies on Gen2 like the lighting, dynamic roof, etc.

you could demo drive gen2 and then test drive a used Gen1.

I have driven a Tri Gen2 when I was in Denver for work after I got my T and it was very nice. Canā€™t justify the Tri, as cool as it is.

Unfortunately Iā€™m about 4 hours+ from closest Rivian spot, and thereā€™s basically no used Gen1ā€™s for sale near me to try and drive.

Appreciate the feedback! I really want to hear about range. What does the Gen1 R1S Large or Max actually get realistically? Is Large+ worth exploring at all if I found one?

Realistically until Boston or Connecticut allow for used sales, it would be difficult for me to find a used one up here I think.

Ben-there are quite a few posts of people buying used that are very happy with them. If you have time, expand you search and buy out of state. You can fly out and drive it back or transport it to you. There are some nice examples here for sale. Run the numbers and see what suits you best. Cheers.

Okay this is another thing I honestly wasnā€™t clear on. If I find one on Rivian Roamer used, but it doesnā€™t show up for my zip code, can I still buy it somehow?

I would prefer to buy used from Rivian if possible. I donā€™t really like to buy used from individuals.

No idea! Boston also told me they wonā€™t ever have demo vehicles because they use all of them for loaners. Which I appreciate, given itā€™s my nearest SC.

I took delivery of a Gen 1 R1T in Sept of '22, and I traded that in for a '25 R1S Trimax. The T is supposed to be the better handling of the two on the road, but my Gen 2's suspension is substantially better than the Gen 1. There are no suspension noises in the new one. They were common in my T. I traded my T in for the same reason you're making your post. My son is 14 now, and between him and the large dogs I have, there wasn't enough room in the back for trips to my dad's house or for even longer trips.

If you're planning trips, I would get the max-pack battery. The battery doesn't seem substantially bigger, but Rivian's charge curve has a sweet spot. The Max makes it much easier to keep the charging in the curve you want for faster stops. In my experience, 15-65% is 20ish minutes, assuming a decent charger, but going up another 10% can easily add 10 minutes to your charge stop.

If you can keep to the good part of the curve, you will be on your way again when you've used the bathroom and secured a snack. In the Large pack of my '22, I could do this for a few stops, but most spacing between chargers had me charging to 70%, and we would always find ourselves waiting for that extra 10 minutes. Those were the only periods during which the charging stops were noticeable over an ICE trip.

The other feather in the Gen 2's cap is the more advanced ADAS system. I didn't think this would be a big deal until I used it. Having the system make lane changes, be able to slow down or speed up to change lanes, and the better lane keep assist make the gen 2 a considerable asset in a road trip.

The tri's additions are all unnecessary if you're looking for a family hauler. The tri is a beast power-wise, and tons of fun to drive, but you're paying for that capability. The Ascend interior is nicer as well, but this is something you can live without and still get the majority of what makes an R1 great.

No, you can't have my R1S even for 3 model y's. Was that the question?

Regarding range: Gen 1 R1S on 20" AT tires. I expect at least the rated range (270 miles) at 75mph or so. I'm at altitude which helps range a little. Other tires will be much more efficient. At 60mph I would expect over 300 miles even on my all-terrain tires. Less in winter of course.

We got Gen1 R1T that we love. Test drove a gen2 S and the 2 best parts were the much improved cameras and the auto lane change.

Have a gen2 R1S and I would advise against a Gen2 max pack for now. Both myself and a number of other gen2 owners are experiencing extreme drop off in charging speed once hits 80s. The last fifteen percent takes seven hours to charge , the last ten percent takes five hours to charge. This is being described by service as expected behavior. The Gen 1 does not experience this. The ride is noticeably smoother on the gen2 but if you find yourself needing to fill to 100 on a regular basis or in time sensitive situations I would definitely advise gen1.

Anyone know whether I can successfully get a used R1S via Rivian Roamer that isnā€™t ā€œavailableā€ for my zip code? Some have suggested Rivian will deliver elsewhere for their used vehicles, but itā€™s not clear to me.

Late model Gen 1s (2023/2024) have many of the suspension improvements of Gen 2 so the ride is likely better than the 2022 and early 2023 models. My 2023 R1S is pretty smoothā€¦

yes, starting about a month ago they started offering delivery of cars outside of your region. The fee is usually $800. However, Gen 1s are tough to findā€¦.they listed about 8 Gen 1 Quads last month with great lease deals but they may have been the last ones.
