This collaboration will help Rivian as much as Ford. Rivian will gain insights to manufacturing, vendor and distribution structure . Ford will have instant access to latest battery/motor skateboard chassis; they just need to provide a body and interior. As far as I know, Dr Scaringe mentioned that he would sell direct and service his BEVs via mobile service vehicles provided by Cox. If this hold true, this will be an idea symbiotic relationship for a legacy venturing into BEV and for a new BE startup! Godspeed to Ford and Rivian!

The title of the post suggests Rivian will be building a Lincoln before they build an R1T.

It will not be. It will simply be the first vehicle built from the Ford/Rivian partnership.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's called the R1LT or R1LS. "L" for Lincoln.

I would be very surprised. This is going to be entirely a Lincoln-designed product on Rivian's platform. Compare a Ford Explorer to a Lincoln Aviator and that's the kind of similarity to expect. Automakers are far beyond slapping a different badge on the same design and calling it a day. The Lincoln model should have no visual similarities to a Rivian. The renderings above are completely off the mark.

Those renderings were a silly attempt at humor. The suggestion of the R1LT name was also made in good fun.

Official Press Release From Ford, Published Today:

LINCOLN, RIVIAN PARTNER TO DELIVER LINCOLN’S FIRST ALL-ELECTRIC VEHICLE

JAN 29, 2020 | DEARBORN, MICH.

  • Lincoln and Rivian will work together to develop an all-new fully electric vehicle, based on Rivian’s skateboard platform
  • Building on Lincoln’s product momentum, the all-electric vehicle will progress Lincoln’s Quiet Flight DNA and feature advanced and intuitive technologies
  • Introduction of this zero-emissions electric vehicle advances Lincoln’s electrification plan that includes the Aviator and Corsair Grand Touring plug-in hybrid vehicles
DEARBORN, Mich., Jan. 29, 2020 – The Lincoln Motor Company announced today that it is working together with Rivian to develop an all-new electric vehicle previously announced as part of Ford Motor Company’s original investment in Rivian.

Lincoln’s first fully electric vehicle will join the Aviator and Corsair Grand Touring plug-in hybrid vehicles, further solidifying Lincoln’s commitment to electrification. The zero-emissions vehicle will feature connected and intuitive technologies designed to create an effortless experience for Lincoln clients.

“Working with Rivian marks a pivotal point for Lincoln as we move toward a future that includes fully electric vehicles,” said Joy Falotico, president, The Lincoln Motor Company. “This vehicle will take Quiet Flight to a new place – zero emissions, effortless performance and connected and intuitive technology. It’s going to be stunning.”

Lincoln has introduced four new SUVs including Corsair, Aviator and Navigator in the past three years. The all-new lineup has helped Lincoln’s global SUV sales grow 7 percent year-over-year and enabled the luxury automaker to deliver its best U.S. SUV sales in 16 years.

As Lincoln adds a new luxury electric vehicle to its lineup, production of the MKZ sedan will end this year in order for the Hermosillo Assembly Plant in Mexico to prepare for production of new Ford vehicles.

The Lincoln battery electric vehicle will be built off of Rivian’s flexible skateboard platform and is part of Ford Motor Company’s planned equity investment in Rivian. This all-new vehicle also is part of Ford’s previously announced investment of more than $11.5 billion into electrification, which includes the Mustang Mach-E and a fully electric version of the best-selling F-150 pickup.

“Our vehicle development partnership with Ford is an exciting opportunity to pair our technology with Lincoln’s vision for innovation and refinement. We are proud to collaborate on Lincoln’s first fully electric vehicle,” said Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe.

I’m very interested in what Rivian is doing with Lincoln. I’m one of those older guys who’s looking for an EV, like the R1S, but has the creature comforts of, say, the new Lincoln Aviator. Also waiting to see what Volvo will do with the XC90 as a BEV.

Hopefully they'll give the XC90 a lot more range than the XC40. That was a huge bummer. They would have been better off sacrificing the Frunk for 300. It's also confusing given the Polestar 2 managed to have 300 on the same platform. Aerodynamics?

Lincoln aesthetics on a Rivian platform could be a pretty killer combo. It's still not clear to me whether Rivian's just going to be shipping them some skateboards and providing expertise or actually collaborating on design and actually building the vehicle.

I doubt if Rivian will be building the Lincoln vehicle because that assumes Rivian has the expertise and resources to run three different models, R1T, R1S & the Lincoln, down the same transfer lines. That's not likely. And it's doubtful that Rivian will set up a separate transfer line for Ford/Lincoln. It's already committed to setting up a separate and very different transfer line for Amazon.

But there are lots of ways in which Rivian and Ford could collaborate besides shipping skateboards to Dearborn. Ford is experienced in high volume production; Rivian is not. Ford is experienced with working in aluminum; Rivian is not. Ford is experienced in working with all kinds of suppliers; Rivian is not. Ford is much more experienced than Rivian with testing, quality assurance in high volume manufacturing and assembly settings, parts supply and distribution, warranty and service, and so on. Ford is a major player in the industry; Rivian is not. Rivian's a newbie.

In other words, there are lots of ways in which Rivian and Ford can collaborate other than Rivian building Ford/Lincoln vehicles. We have almost no information in how they will actually collaborate. We have hints in how Rivian and Cox might collaborate, but we've heard almost nothing about what Rivian and Ford will do together. Still, it's a great coup for Rivian to be working closely with Ford. It's a win-win for both companies.

Wow, well that's a surprise if it's accurate. However, come to think of it, with a 3 million square foot, newly renovated facility in Normal, setting up a separate transfer line for Ford/Lincoln does make sense, and it brings a lot of experienced Ford personnel into Rivian's realm. And it brings in more revenue for Rivian. Ford/Lincoln pays for the skateboard and the assembly of the Lincoln top hat. Much of what Rivian learns in supplying and assembling Lincolns is transferable to the R1T and R1S. It will be challenging - 4 different models, R1T, R1S, Amazon and Lincoln, starting up in a brand new plant. If Rivian pulls it off successfully, it will be a big win for the brand.

Excerpt from another article from back in August with a direct quote from Hackett:

Rivian will build the skateboard and likely assemble the entire vehicle. "It would be counterproductive for us to try and make what they have capacity to do in the beginning here, because they've got a factory in Illinois that meets a lot of our criteria," Hackett said.
Hackett said overall he likes Rivian founder RJ Scaringe's clean sheet approach and thinks tapping into the tech company's engineering will speed up Ford's rollout of smart vehicles.
