Does anyone have any advice on what to do on a lease, if the vehicle breaks down/has issues from day 1? I took possession of the vehicle the other morning, and when we took it out the same afternoon, a bunch of warning lights came on and a message saying that the vehicle is shutting down. We called Rivian roadside, and rebooted twice as instructed, but no success. Eventually had it towed to the service center, and got a loaner the next day. The service center is backed up, next appointment available in November, but they agreed to take a look at our vehicle sooner. It’s been a 4 days, but still no updates from their side. This is a 2025 Gen2. It’s been quite frustrating to say the least.

Damn that sucks...some states do have 'cool down period' laws which allow you to bail out of contracts a day or two after signing them, so you might want to google that for your state ASAP if you're thinking to do so.

Our Gen 2 R1S has been in service since we purchased it a month ago. AC did not work at delivery, compressor was replaced and the HV battery had a problem as well so that is being replaced now. We've been driving a Gen 1 R1S quad since and hopefully will be getting ours back tomorrow. It has been frustrating for sure but the loaner has helped us maintain some goodwill. We will see how things go once we get it back. Hopefully no more major issues develop, but only time will tell.

Gen 2 definitely seems to have introduced a whole new crop of issues that need to be worked out. I'm not sure how Lemon laws apply to leases (and they vary by state) but typically if the vehicle is out of service for more than 30 days in the first year it can be returned as a Lemon.

I had the same issue with my leased 2023 R1T. Glad you asked this question. It sure was a poor way to start off and kind of trashed my trust in the vehicle. I got a loaner also, luckily. I was without my brand new vehicle for a few months and once returned have not had additional issues until recently. The new issues are minor. I love my Rivian, and guess that with this newer technology there are going to be a few issues.

RoadRunner, Sorry to hear your issues with Gen2. Do you have any more details on HV battery issue or other issues. I'm asking since I am expectiing to take delivery of a Gen2 R1S DMMax within 10days. SC held it since It did not pass QC at Service center and I believe HVAC or components may be replaced?

Are you dealing with Colo Springs or Denver?

I was told by the service manager that a switch in the HV battery was not working, causing battery issues/faults. (Yes, pretty vague but that's about the extent of detail I was able to get out of him and I don't remember everything he said on the phone). Supposedly the actual battery cells were fine, but due to the complexity of the repair required, they replaced the entire battery pack as a unit in order to get the vehicle back to us faster. It sounds like they could have taken in apart and replaced the switch but that would have required a "specialist" (presumably a tech with more advanced HV battery repair training/experience) from the Denver service center and would have taken longer. We have some travel coming up and they did scramble a bit to get it back to us before we leave. They have been very apologetic and communication has been excellent overall throughout this process.

The service manager also told me that the AC issues and HV battery issues were "related", however he was unable to explain exactly how they were related and I didn't really press him on it.

The R1S is being delivered to us this afternoon after exactly a month in service. They assure me they have done extensive testing after doing the repairs; hopefully things will be trouble-free from here...

Admins, any thoughts of requiring a certain number of posts before a new user can start a thread? These one post complaints are a drag and skew the experience of the forums. IMO

2025 Rivian R1S Gen 2
have a similar experience. Took my gen 2 r1s 2 months ago and it’s been in the shop for 3 weeks now for a similar hvac issue. Mine was a thermal system failure notice. AC was working fine and stopped working. Service center rep has been great in communicating the issues. Said the heat pump malfunctioned and replacement parts are taking a long time to get delivered bc of the new gen so hopefully another week.

Driving a gen 1 R1T loaner which is very fun to drive. Also got the drive the Silverado EV and it doesn’t hold water to the Rivian.

first month driving the R1S was awesome and investing in a tech company that makes cars requires patience as they figure things out, which they will. just waiting to be able to take her out again.

I recently had an issue with my R1T -- leaky CV joint that I found while rotating the tires. I submitted a ticket on a Saturday when I found it with pics and selected the first available appointment which was for mid-November.

My past experience was that the Service Hub would call you back within a few hours of submitting a ticket but I didn't hear anything. So on Monday, I called Rivian and spoke with the Hub at that time. They said they only handle emergencies on the weekends now. They said they make a priority for fluid leaks and were able to get me in on Monday. I had an enterprise rental and my truck was fixed with a new half-shaft by Wednesday.

Moral of this story is they can likely work you in quicker as your car isn't working. This will also be covered under warranty -- and is why there's a warranty to begin with. Until it's fixed, enjoy the loaner and know that you'll have more miles to use on your lease when your truck is working.

Thanks Roadrunner appreciate the detail. Consistent to what the SC told you the HVAC and battery issue appears to be related from what i have seen on other posts for Gen 2. The denver SC is keeping my Gen2 R1S two extra weeks before deliver to fix the HVAC - what they told me. Appears many early GEN2 vin's have HAVC issues which I think is integrated to HV battery for perhaps thermal management? Yes I would agree replacing whole battery unit is easier on SC. Wishing you on the road soon!

Update: Our R1S was returned to us about a month ago, all issue appear to be fixed after AC and HV Battery repair. We left for almost a month in Europe the day after getting it back and just got back home a couple days ago. So far everything seems to be working well, but we've only driven it a few times since getting it back since we were gone most of the last month.
