Really sorry to hear that @COMtnEV. I’m fortunate my use case makes the throttled charging less of an issue for me, but angry Rivian isn’t addressing or acknowledging it. Was hopeful the latest OTA would help, but it didn’t (even after a hard reset - @Mellowyellow and @OYLman).

I’m considering making a YT video about it in an effort to draw more attention. If I go that route I’ll add a link here or maybe start a new thread.

I elevated the low temp L2 charger throttling issue on the ‘Batteries Included’ YouTube livestream today and did get some attention, so here’s hoping someone at Rivian is listening.

Rivian R1T R1S L2 charger down to 2.7kwh at 24F.. Should I be worried? 1000006432

I thought it was working but apparently not. I have no idea why it managed to charge to 100% the night we received the update but it's back to throttling.

What was the temperature? I haven't seen 1.4kW recently.

The battery was 44F when charging started. That's about the temperature of the garage at the moment.

Latest data (having hooked up to ABRP to get live data. Topped up from 73% to 90%. Ambient temp was 50F when I started, peaking at 53F before dropping into mid 40s when ending. Charge rate depends on what data you look at. Charger output always ~0.4kV higher than Rivian App reports, and ABRP power is ~0.4kW lower than Rivian App. Using Rivian data, saw the same drop from 8.9kW to 7.2kW at 81% SoC, and then to 3.6kW at 89%.

Battery temp (per ABRP - the Rivian app temp is consistently 2-3F colder) started at 42F and warmed up to 46F by the end of the 3 1/2 hour charge session. I wonder where "warm enough" is (consistently)?

Haven't paid attention to it before, but motors warmed up into the mid 60s by the end of the session.

Estimated charging time continues to be inaccurate. Was 2:30 5 minutes into the session, slowly crept up to 2:50 an hour later (while still charging at 8.9kW), and wound up taking 3:45. This makes me think that the part of the Rivian software that estimates charging time is not "aware" of the throttling.

A question for people with ABRP. Do you see consistent difference between the ABRP data and the data from the Rivian app (either on phone or in truck)? I'm seeing ABRP battery temp ~3F higher, SoC about 1% higher, and the ABRP power being 0.4kW lower (although as MarkNorman suggested, this may be due to the two apps measuring different things).

Lastly, don't know if it's a coincidence or not, but after a month and a half of crickets from Rivian service regarding my ticket about vampire drain (and the fact that the L3 Rivian charger was DOA the first time I tried it), I got a call on Thursday night (the day after expressing my frustration on this thread). The message was essentially "sorry, this comupletely fell through the cracks", but at least it was a response. I called back and added the charging throttle issue to the ticket (didn't get through to anyone technical). Still awaiting a callback.

The same temps I charged at today. So even the amount of charge throttling is inconsistent.

When you previously successfully charged, had your R1S been sitting in the garage, or did you charge fairly soon after driving?

@COMtnEV Sure seems like the Rivian app is reporting total consumption rather than just energy to the battery (Charge rate). It’s strange, the data is coming straight from the vehicle (through the cloud), I don’t know why ABRP and the Rivian display/app are so different on several metrics.

Since OTA 2024.51, I have been consistently seeing the pack warm up to 46F while L2 charging and still throttling. As far as I can tell, it holds the pack at 46F. I really think if it nudged up to >50F the throttling would cease or at least have less of an effect. That seems to be the threshold.

Don’t know if any of you watch or listen to the Batteries Included livestream on Friday morning. I brought this issue up and am following up as best I can. I think some Rivian folks follow that.

It was right when I got home from a 25 minute drive on city streets.

Just confirming that after weeks of testing, 50°F seemed to be the sweet spot. I opened a ticket with Rivian in December with a scheduled appointment February 7th. Rivian called last week stating that they are going to close the ticket "because it is now a known issue with all Gen2 R1S vehicles, and to be on the lookout for a software update that increases the cold charging rate". I tried to get more details but the rep couldn't provide them. This particular image was on Jan 16th (with 2024.47) before the latest update when the R1S was parked in my heated garage (around 58°F). Throttles to around 3.5kw at 80% soc, the 0.5kw at 90%. Then the battery hit 50°F and went back up to 7.3kw (portable charger at 32amp). Since the latest update (2024.51.30), I have noticed the battery warming up more with long overnight charging sessions, and Im curious if this was part of the fix. It will still throttles when below 50°F battery temp though.

Has anyone tested to see if this was fixed with the latest 2024.51.31 Hotfix?
