Just got my new R1S and charging for basically the second time. It's been in the 20s all night. I've been charging 3.5 hrs and it's charged 7%. It started at 11kwh for ten minutes then dropped to 6.9 for 80 minutes and has been at 2.7 ever since. At this rate I'll hit 100% by the time I have to leave for a trip in the morning. But I don't have confidence I'll be able to charge while I'm out.
I've never had this trouble with my Tesla before, no matter what the temperature. I'm very uneasy. Is this experience normal?

Thanks in advance!

I should add I'm using a Tesla home charger and an A2Z adapter

Sounds like something is getting too hot. The adapter may be a red herring though. Rivians have had issues with home chargers overheating before. Our Rivian heats up the cable much more than our polestar does charging at the same speed.

Thank you for the reply. It's colder this time than when I was charging 10x as fast two days ago. Could the temperature outside not be a factor either? Maybe I should check the cable and charger?

That is not normal. I’ve never noticed any problem L2 charging at 20F temperatures. I suppose it could be your adapter, but I have the Gen 2 Tesla wall charger and the only difference is that the adapter is built into the unit.

That’s not normal in my experience. I charged a lot using the portable 14-50 charger in temps colder than that and it always delivered the full 7.6kwh until the set charge point.

I just looked and it dropped to 1.5kwh. this is crazy. I checked the breaker, charger, adapter.. everything is cool. I unplugged the charger from the car and back... And I'm back to 2.7 again. Do I need to heat my cabin to heat the battery?

Thanks everyone for confirming this is abnormal. Just talked to support who wants me to isolate what the problem is. I'll be trying to charge other places.. not positive I'll drive my brand new rivian on the family trip tomorrow though

Do you have access to a CCS charger anywhere around you? The DC charging is different from the AC charging, you might want to test the DC charging, especially if that is what you are doing on the trip.

Second thing to test if you have access to a NEMA 14/50 outlet is plug in you portable charger and see what that is giving you.

DC charging contacts are different from AC charging contacts. If you have a infrared thermometer or camera, you may be able to see that plug is getting hot. It's a guess of course.

Push the plug in harder and see if it helps. Contact support. It's not normal for rate to go down.

I don’t know how far you’re traveling tomorrow; if it were me, I would do some testing with DC fast charging and get a feel for what your efficiency is going to be. Because the question is if the problem is just with L2 charging, or you have a more systemic issue with charging in general.

L2 is sometimes slower while its warming the battery at those temps, but we're not talking hours.

What % was your battery at when charging at these rates? Your experience roughly matches what I and a few others have been seeing with our gen2 max packs at >~80% charge. Its too early to tell conclusively from what folks have posted and I’m away for the next week, but Iā€˜m now suspecting Rivian have done some really funky stuff with the gen2 BMS and the Max pack battery.
