Hi! My spunky little R1T Carter is about to cross 55k miles and is nearing the end of its warranty period. As one of the very early VINs ( #6709), it’s spent a fair amount of time with the Rivian repair shop. It’s never left me stranded, but since I’ve owned it, I’ve had HVAC, subframe replacement, half-shafts, cover, and other cosmetic issues.

Overall, I’ve been very happy with the truck, and I accepted the issues as someone who bought a very early VIN. I feel like I’m at an inflection point where I decide to keep it or go Gen2 (thinking dual motor large pack).

Anyone at the same point who kept the truck well past their warranty period?

Most of the big stuff has been covered it seems with your truck. Mine is newer, and less miles, but I plan to keep mine past the factory warranty. I did hedge my bet and get an Xcare extended warranty.

I really like the truck overall. I wouldn't mind a bit quicker, like the Cyberbeast, but other than that, it does everything I ask of it. It isn't too big, efficiency is decent, it an absolute blast to drive.

Were you thinking about selling and replacing with a new(er) one?

Depends on your finances doesn’t it? A bit like other premium priced cars. Not a lot to go wrong but when it does it’s more expensive to repair than the basic economy car. Either way, buying new likely cost more than maintaining. Third party extended warranty is another alternative.

I feel like the years and not miles is the real concern with EV's.

So I'd keep it until you're exceeding the miles of the power train/battery warranty.

The new ones are also too darn expensive.

I do plan on doing exactly this. I have roughly the same VIN as you with roughly the same experience. The only difference is I have about 35K miles.

Plus we might be the only ones left standing without a 12VDC battery issue. Haha

Do you mind sharing the cost of the Xcare extended warranty?

I bought a new one and will probably do the same thing when this one is in the same mileage spot. The amount I spend doesn't hurt my overall financial picture and I enjoy having a nice car. There are worse things to spend money on. If you have the money and it doesn't matter, buy another one.

I am at about same mileage with one built a little before yours.

I plan to keep it for a while unless a big repair or G2 Halo Quadmax lust takes over....

Although replacing it wouldn't hurt my financial picture i can use that money for other things that have my attention or simply keep it invested for future returns....

Hard to justify spending $60k to get essentially the same thing I have in a G1 Quad with a G2 Tri...

Edit....it does depend alot on financial comfort...some are more comfortable spending income on things like fixed vehicle payments than the unknown of large repair bills. I am comfortable with the risk of high repair bills but many are not...and that is very understandable. If fixed payments are more comfortable then a new one might make more sense.

I'm in the OP's boat with a 17XX (early vin), but I've had almost zero issues and almost 55,000 miles, and also find myself grouped in with @R1Tom. Decisions, decisions....

I'm VIN #000045 and at almost 53K miles. Probably going to hit 60K in May or June with the planned trips coming up to Yosemite, Pinnacles, and Disneyland. Yesterday, I scheduled a comprehensive inspection at the SC for early April and will add items to be checked out from now until then. Most likely will keep this one!

I think it was about 5k for 175k additional warranty and 10 additional years.

Basically there is a step function on the pricing for every 10k. It is best to buy it while still in the factory bumper-to-bumper warranty. You can also choose your deductible and what level of coverage. Find what works between price/term/deductible. There are some discount coupons out there too.

It is transferable and cancelable (pro-rata). For about the cost of 2 shocks, I cover everything else., and the other 2 shocks. My truck is for my business so it hurt a little less as I could use the tax write off this past year when I purchased it. I thought given the term I could get, it could be a great selling tool if I ever did sell the truck.

Given mine is a first gen truck, from a new company, I figured I'd limit my risk. The cost was less than what even a moderate repair would be for this truck.

I'm about the same as you. Same 6xxx VIN and 56K miles, but I'm going to be retiring in 2 weeks, so I'll be putting a lot fewer miles on Arty when I no longer have a 96 mile round trip commute.

I'm keeping it for the long term.

I have Vin #09xxx from August 2022 and I'm at 20k miles. Love the R1T overall, but it keeps having the same issues, mainly rattles and clunks in the suspension and drivetrain. Has been in the SC for a few times but those problems keep coming back. Next SC visit already coming up..
It's starting to get annoying and I kind of lost faith that they can perform longer lasting fixes.

Even with the full $7.5k 2022 tax credit and pre-order pricing, selling or trading-up doesn't make financial sense imho. At least not now, so short after the biggest depreciation phase..
Would love to just keep this early first Gen as long as possible, hence for now I'll just keep scheduling SC visits and hope for better fixes.. :)

The “big money” failure points (battery, drivetrain) are warrantied for 8 years / 175,000 miles on a 2022. (All Gen 1 Quad-Large)

I’m absolutely expecting to keep mine until it falls apart and is no longer fiscally responsible to repair. (Barring catastrophic incident.)

This is my plan as well. VIN 2488 and I’m at 61k miles now. I like *this* truck too much to get a different one.

Gen1 R1T, 30k miles, 2 years old. I've had mostly minor issues except for:
  • CV boot issue replaced both front halfshafts - price not listed on invoice, 2 hours to repair so $400 for labor, not sure what the parts cost but id guess its $800-$1000 each? so $2400 total.
  • rear spoiler replacement - $2000 parts and labor
  • two different door handles replaced - $1600 parts and labor
  • one side mirror replaced - $1000 parts and labor
  • other small minor repairs/replacements - $5500 parts and labor
i'm worried about the maintenance costs of the R1T past the end of warranty especially if there ends up being a major suspension or electrical (non-powertrain) issue.

im considering selling somewhere around 50-55k miles. depending on when that is, i may look at the Scout Traveler or R3X if thats close to production.
