You guys are the best for doing that. Seriously, that was a lot of time and energy to help someone out.

Now to find a solution to charge!!! Our family personally prefers to park in the covered parking garage, so my husband drove his R1T over and there was also multiple vehicles not plugged in as well as multiple ICE vehicles parked in electric spots.
(There were many other regular parking spaces available in both lots, but people chose to park in the electric spots.)
Not going to lie, but I seriously would have considered yanking one of those ICE vehicles right out of a spot with the off-road gear that lives under my trunk. Not saying I would have went through with it (video cameras and all), but I would have considered it.

I’m sure it’s a problem at most airports. We have just learned to live with idiots and arrive early so that we’re not without an electric charge while we’re gone! With a family of six, I certainly don’t want to have any issues. The ICE vehicles should be charged a fine.

Amazing story. My R1T is the best vehicle I've owned and I love driving it every day. I also love the mission that RJ and the company are on. But the Rivian community is just awesome and such a great part of ownership.

Our Rivian community here in KC helps a Chicago owner in times of a charging need at MCI (Kansas City International Airport). This is a testimony to what our clubs can do across the country.

I got an email yesterday from a gentleman that lives in Chicago. He is the owner of a beautiful Launch Green R1S. A friend of his was borrowing his R1S while this friend was working in a rural area about an hour and a half outside of Kansas City.

His friend had to fly out of our airport and arrived there with 7% battery and no place to charge and was running late. I will throw this out there: his friend is new to the EV charging world and still a rookie (just like we all were start at!).

So, this friend sent a text message to his friend, the owner, to let him know. The R1S was scheduled to be sitting at the airport for several days and something had to be done for the battery. Plus, it was going to be cold and potentially come back with zero charge.

The owner had been in Denver (traveling nurse) and gone to a couple Rivian club events there a while back. So, he jumped on the Rivian forums and found the Kansas City chapter and sent us an email, reaching out for help.

Meanwhile, the owner had called Rivian and they were able to guide him through shutting off non-essential systems to preserve battery. Rivian did let him know it would probably be drained with 0% within three days.

We got the email early morning on Black Friday. Since I was home with five kids for the holiday break I could not really do much! My husband came to the rescue!

My husband called the owner and they came up with a plan, as we roped in another club member to drive up in case they needed to take it to a charger outside the airport.

After a 40 min drive to the airport, they both were able to find the R1S. The owner unlocked it at this time and he also was able to make my husband a driver, all accomplished remotely.

At the MCI economy parking lot, all of the charging spots were filled with electric cars that were plugged in. I am also frustrated to report that multiple ICE vehicles and electric/hybrid vehicles had taken charging spots that were not plugged in.

My husband and the other KC member decided to park our R1T truck and plug it into the charger to save the only EV charging spot found in the massive parking garage at MCI. They then took the shuttle back over to the economy parking lot C and got the R1S back to the parking garage, barely making it there with 3% left.

This story, along with MANY, is another amazing application of our Rivian community; building trust and relationships amongst people that don’t even know each other. What other community would you find someone willing to assign a total stranger a phone key for their car and know that they were going to help you out?

Rivian is more than a car company, they are developing a community of kindness and relationship. It’s really nice to be involved and be able to help out in the community like this.

That’s very nice. I hope that sort of effort finds you the same way should you ever be in need.
What a very nice thing to say. Thank you for taking the time to read our story of hope and community.

Great stuff.

Wish there was something that could be done about ICE vehicles parking in charging stalls.

Several members of our KCRC have exhausted contacts to get this problem addressed. Just got to keep being the squeaky wheel. ICE vehicles wanting a “closer space” and therefore take up an EV charging space should be fined.
