One of the good things about the pandemic is that it seems to be getting our esteemed business and political leaders to refocus some of their efforts on our own industry and workers, rather than shipping everything off to China. Once things like national defense and core industries start failing, people tend to sit up and take notice. Course correction for the past 50 years incoming.

At one time, saying negative things about offshoring, etc. often wound up with accusations of nationalism, protectionism, isolationism, etc. from certain groups of people. Hopefully we are past that and it seems people are finally realizing that it's simply not such a good idea to rely on the rest of the world for all your stuff, especially tech and medicine.

By the time Intel gets their foundry up and running, there probably will be a glut of chips.

The move is purely political and does little to ease the issue over the next 18 months....

Yes and no. I imagine EVs require more chips than your standard ICE vehicle. So even though the supply will eventually catch up to the demand, the demand is going to increase each year as more companies move away from ICE vehicles and towards EVs.

Someone rather prominent promoted this train-of-thought quite vigorously pre-pandemic. ;)

Don't think so. Worldwide demand has been increasing for years and will continue to increase, and not just for automotive applications. SoC (System On a Chip) is gaining popularity in automotive applications, and is going to grow. Perfect spot for Intel.

Intel CEO, Pat Gelsinger used to be our CEO at VMware. He is highly competent. Heck, most people at our company were genuinely sad to see him go. Intel got lucky. He's got vision and he treats people vastly better than most people in the tech industry. He will push innovation much harder than Intel's previous leadership.

Just to be clear, its not SoC that's in shortage as much as much more ordinary low level chips that are. The demand is for simple chips more than complex chips.

As for demand growing, yes agree. The supply is growing faster than the demand however. In particular to EVs, the pinch point is not chips. Its the battery supplies.

I hope so, too. I'm sure there's a good balance that can be struck that lifts everyone up. Regardless, it's going to be a very... interesting century as the world re-aligns itself.

I'm not a huge fan of this person, but on this, I definitely agreed with him. But I've only spent the majority of my life in government and national defense. What do I know? ;)

.
And the simple chips that are in short supply is not what Intel is going to produce in a state of the art fab.

That's exactly why I said Intel is well positioned to get a big part of the SoC market with their former expertise in CPUs. They are not going to invest $20B in a state of the art plant to manufacturer commodity voltage regulators, op-amps, and FPGAs.
