I'm getting closer to my R1S and am cautiously excited but the vampire drain story is concerning me.

I disagree saying that's negligible. 1400+kWh is nearly two months of electric usage for the average US household.

That's up to $570 if you're in San Diego (worst case), or $325 If you're average. Over a 5 year span you're now at $1600-$2800 wasted.
Yes ... not very Eco-conscious of Rivian ... they really need to fix this. I'm sure people would be up in arms if their ICE vehicle leaked a gallon or two of gas a month just sitting in the garage!

I have Gear Guard disabled at home and lock my truck in the garage each night (use the fob or PaaK to lock it). Thought I would worry about vampire drain after all the horror stories in this forum, but after nearly 2.5 months with my truck I can't say it's bothered me at all. It's less than 1%, maybe a mile a day?

That said, I did have a bit of a panic the other day when the app glitched and said 0% remaining. Rushed out to my garage pretty quick when I saw this, LOL. 😆 Fortunately it was just a bug in the app. Force-close the app and restart cleared it right up:

Rivian R1T R1S I'm getting closer to my R1S and am cautiously excited but the vampire drain story is concerning me. 1686594066469

Another tip - I leave the driver's window a couple inches down when in the garage. That way if the 12V batteries did ever die, at least I wouldn't be completely locked out. 😉

We started tracking our charge back in January of 2023, about a month after taking delivery of our R1T, mainly because all the chatter on here about vampire drain.

At this point we have almost 400 data points logged, nearly every single mile accounted for since January. We have a relatively short commute of ~10 miles per day, generally keep the truck charged between 30% and 70%, and charge about once a week. The 'vampire drain' on a daily basis is almost nothing on our late 2022 (VIN 16k) R1T. The truck is garaged at home, with gear guard disabled at home. At work it's in a parking garage with gear guard running.

The single largest loss while sitting we've tracked is 4%, and pretty much every time it's been a significant change it's due to the ambient temperature dropping overnight (February 3 & March 2, by March 2 our tool included temperature tracking, and that instance has a 10 degree shift overnight). But on the other side, we've seen 2% 'vampire' gains also occur.

*EDIT* This is just the data for 'idle charge level differences.' And it's been sorted by the 4% difference. The main observation is that the charge level can say '1%' lost, but it's really only the truck lost .25% and fell below the threshold for what displays as a whole percentage point. Also, the ambient temperature plays a large role in what the battery reports back as a charge level. When it warms up during the day, the reported power levels increase, and if it gets cold over night, suddenly the batter shows a large drop, and it will 'recover' when it warms up. The battery level is not a fixed and consistent level, like a tank of gas. It reacts to the environment.

If you're that worried about 1600 bucks over 5 years you probably shouldn't be buying a 100K dollar space truck. It's negligible if you factor in what it is for overall costs. The Rivian is putting money in your pocket compared to a Raptor R or a TRX. Tens of thousands of dollars in fuel costs in your pocket compared to those trucks and considering that's the closest comparison utility and performance wise I'd say the Rivian is a pretty sweet deal.

Sure if you compare it to a leaf it's going to look bad but grand scheme Rivian's vampire drain is a non issue.

You're missing the point. A leaf, a raptor, a Tesla, a hummer EV, etc. don't lose this much power sitting in a garage. Anyone else in the world would say that wasting almost two months of electric usage per year vs losing 0 gas or minimal kWh with another brand is undeniably an issue. Multiply this by a % of the entire fleet.

It's not just cost but also the eco-consciousness / green factor as it's a defect specific to Rivians.

Then why are there all sorts of people here with other EVs saying the vampire drain is similar? I don't know for sure myself as I only have the one EV for now. Sure you lose 0 gas overnight but the Rivian is still more fuel efficient than ANY ICE full sized truck. Big picture wise it's not the issue you're making it out to be.

This is awesome! thanks for doing such a great job at this. This is as much real world info I could ask for. It help explain all the different info out there as well as the different EV drain info info! Crazy how much it can differ on the day!
