In Barstow Ca. Dec. 6th. I pull up to RAN fast charge. #3, with My R1T needing an hour of charge. It connects, and says 51 Min. to my set point I walk over to the IHOP in the parking lot. I get there order my breakfast, look at my cell App. charging had stopped. I get up leave my table, walk over to the Rivian charger and I have $5.00 Idle fee. I restart the charger, seems ok, go back finish my breakfast. After the charger is about finished I get in my truck the charger ends I get a second invoice. I hoped since I used the same charger just restarted, the idle fee would not be charged, it was.
Then I get to Las Vegas at the RAN charger the next morning on the 7th. I hook up, all seems fine, it says an hour charge time, I walk to the store to Sprouts store to get coffee and the App says charging stopped, I run back, there is a $10. Idle fee, I reset the charger and sit there the remaining time and ask others if this has ever happened to them, no they said.
Is the reason it stopped charging because I walked away and the truck locked? If so shouldnt Rivian inform people that one must sit with vehicle and not get coffee?
So, I ask has this happened to you? If so is it a just charge in your mind?

I have not had the issue but charges seem really high. There is a 10 minute grace period and then 50 cents a minute in both locations so those are 20 and 30 minutes of idle time.

My phone alerts me when charging has stopped, were you not alerted? Have you contacted Rivian to see if there is anything they can do to see what happened?

Also curious were the stations busy? Tesla used to only charge if the station was almost full, not sure if they still do but getting an idle fee on a location that is more than half empty seems excessive.

For me though and the way I charge when traveling, I rarely have a session that is going to be longer than 30 minutes so am usually pretty close to the vehicle.

I had something similar happen, but it was when the RANs were free. I plugged in at Inyokern and we went to get burgers, but the charger failed. The issues is that the app gave me no warning. This was over a year ago, and I am not sure they have fixed the app.

With charging apps like EA, EVGO and ChargePoint, I get warning if charging stops.

I was the only one charging of the many hi power chargers, 400 KW at first mostly about 300, then at 80% down to about 100 or less.
No I got no notice, I did not know that was possible, is that in the App.? or automatically and the Android needs to be set?

I used the Inyokern back when they were free, no issues, as well Sacramento and the Manteca RAN between. I have used the Tesla Adapter without any issue.

My idle time was $5. first time, then $10 second time in LV. The chargers in LV were on one far side of the parking lot by the freeway, and the Sprouts store a 15 min. walk. The block that has a Guitar Center and the Sprouts and the RAN chargers is big! Without any notice I did not realize the failure till I was in the store. Yes, I agree the charges seem high, especally when there were about 8 or 9 chargers available. I would never allow my vehicle to prevent anyone else to be waiting for me to move my vehicle. I even park straight in all parking spaces in all lots as a matter of respect.

Come to think of it, I wonder, was there any grace peroid? I will look at the check in times and invoice time.

I've had this happen on the Rivian app, but no noise or vibration, so I only know if I'm looking at my phone. If I'm grocery shopping, walking the dog, or otherwise engaged, I won't know.

I've also had this happen on the EA app with a rental EV, again it didn't vibrate or make a noise, I happened to look at my phone and saw it cancel while in a mall. I quickly went out and saw the person next to me leaving in a hurry, people waiting in line said she pressed buttons and tried the other cable on her car, then rushed off when she realized what she did.

I wonder, can someone remove a charger cable? In this case there were other spaces open, even ADA spaces open to charge, as well as smaller chargers and other near by chgarging brands with DCFC. The Rivian chargers are only for Rivians right? if a Honda tries to plug in the screen says Rivian only in my experience.

They can't remove the cable, it's locked when you lock it.

Rivian recently opened up to other manufacturers, but I believe it's limited to Joshua Tree at the moment.

RAN chargers are single cable chargers, so not like they can try the other side of it. And I don't remember a cancel button, but I could be wrong.

I saw no options available on the charger. My truck was locked. I was also careful to close the cell phone to dissalow a butt or pocket choice in the App. I have viewed the reciept sent, there was a 10 min. "grace peroid" in the times stated. It did however round up with the seconds.

Whenever I connect to a charger - RAN, Tesla, EA - I always check the status every five or ten minutes or so just to see the charge rate and if anything "went south". There are glitchy chargers, especially EA, that need to be reset. The Rivian app is good for countdown time.

I will look for an app setting to get notified, as well just watch every 5 min. if I am 5 min. away from the vehicle., I guess, getting coffee or food first, then sit in vehicle is the safest.

I can see if its 100 degrees out or below 32 degrees out or pushing the charge into the 90% range there may be an issue of the charger dropping a session. These times were about 55 to 60 degrees and open stalls for more plugins. But I guess 15 bucks on a trip to Las Vegas is cheap? Maybe I am just feeling over charged from the $20 beer and the $25 to $30 Martinies and $30 Hotdogs?

That feels unfair, @Greg Chick, if you had no way of taking action to avoid an idle fee -- but you get to decide if it feels small or large to you.

If it feels large, take action to minimize injustice. If it feels small, adapt in whatever way feels best.

I think you've got this. How can the rest of us help?

Well, if the issue is something others have been experiencing and a systemic problem exists via a choice at Rivian, then fussing about it is good for one and all. I was actually asking about this to get a pulse for the issue. My position is ideological since I mostly charge at home and via solar panels as well I am "finacially secure" as the saying goes.

One thing I have learned is an option may exist for a notice to be selected and used. Another thing is just the Chat / Blog thing is what goes on here for the most part.

The best possible result would be Rivian cancels fees that are from Rivian equipment caused. I do fully support an idle fee being charged for vehicles left unattended past the scheduled charge time known at start up.

I am not really a rebel looking for a cause. Cheers to the better good for all.
