Curiosity got the best of me, and I'm wondering what some people's charging habits are.

I have had my Rivian for one year, and I have a detached garage that has a 50amp sub panel in it. Because I also have a 30 gallon vertical compressor in there that could draw 15 amps, I opted to put in a nema 14-50r that's on a 40 amp breaker, and configured my grizzl-e to max 32amp out put.

However for the most part, I think I only used the 32 amp output on a handful of occasions. Because I have set electric rates, I just plug in when I get home at night and I find myself lowering the charge output on my dash to between 16-22 amps. This allows my car to charged from 50% to 70% in 6-8 hours which is plenty for me. I guess in my head limiting the charging rate also gives me a lot more more peace of mind that nothing is going to melt. I just rarely full send it.

I guess if you have time of use or some type of variable utility rate then going with the 60 amp setup would make sense. But I'm curious on everyone else charging habits. Am I a outlier? Who goes full send all the time?

I do with our three chargers (all 48A on 60A) - as though we almost never need it day to day, who wants to remember to have to up the power when you do? Have TOU set up via the trucks (9:30pm to 7am) - so if we charge outside of those hours manually start it from the app. Charge limit of 85% and only go over that for long day trips.

Lately I've been trying to charge at work.

This is a bit of a challenge as I don't want to charge when I'm well above 60% and I don't want to have it get below 30% or so.

So I typically plug in for a few hours or so 2-3 times a week.

I do charge at home if I'm going to go on a road trip. When I do that its a full charge. I believe its set at 48A.

I charge to 70% nightly at the full amount the charger will send. I have two EV's with a Grizzl'e duo charger, so the output to the Rivian varies based on what the other car is doing.

I set it to start at 10:30pm because that's a time of low grid-stress, and I believe a prime time for wind power generation in my area. Although good data on that is hard to come by.

I charge to 70% per night but it may be plugged in for days.

I have the Rivian charger hardwired so no reason not to charge at 48 amps. Going slower isn’t going to anything for your battery so it doesn’t matter. I do understand not wanting to melt a plug but that’s why I hardwired the charger.

Retired but I typically burn off 20-40 miles a day. I have a Level 2 EVSE outside on it’s own 60 amp circuit, but most days I just pull into the garage and connect to the Level 1 charger as I exit the truck. Typically by the time I take the R1 back out the next day it is back to 70%. If I need to charge more quickly or have a longer road trip coming up, I use the Level 2… usually to 70%… once a month or so to 95-100 before a 300 mile round trip.

I charge to 70%, but i burn a minimum of 30% a day. In the summer... well, I just beg the charger to stay cool enough to actually charge to 70 stating at 11pm... we've since last summer installed a purge fan to get it at least down to 100F in the garage. Can also run the newly installed 2ton mini split to knock off heat off if the fan doesn't cool it enough.

If by “full send” you mean “charge at the full rate the vehicle and charger are capable of” - basically always.

Rivian tops out at 240V 48A. That’s slow enough to be perfectly fine for the battery.

I have linked 48A units that split between two dispensers. If only one vehicle is plugged in, it gets full power. If two are, they split it.

I do have time-of-use billing, so charging is cheapest 9 PM - 7 AM, so vehicles only charge between those hours. But they charge as fast as they want and can get within those hours.

Rivian set to 70% max most of the time, Mach-E set to 80%. Only higher if I’m planning a road trip.

Some do! If their setup allows high amp charging, many go full send to top up quickly—especially EV owners with Level 2 chargers.

I charge at max rate as it is the most efficient typically. If you extend out the charging interval, the truck has to stay awake longer to monitor the charging.

I also only charge to 50% in the summer and 60% in the winter. It will reduce degradation by enough for me to care. Summers are hot here and the battery packs are less tolerant of high temps when at a higher charge level. It has worked great with my Teslas which are showing minimal degradation after 3+ years (both are 3% or less).

I run the full 48A. I charge to 70% daily as that's Rivian's recommended charge level.

I did not vote, no category for my pattern.

I usually charge at 40 or 44 amps, only plug in when I’m charging, usually charge to 80% when I charge and plug in when I get below 60%. Unless I’m going out of town I only charge once or twice a week.
