For those that think the gear tunnel concept is new, a coworker shared this picture from a VW Doka, after I showed him a photo of the Camp Kitchen.

To more completely explain:

Normally in pickups - whether RWD or 4WD or AWD - the rear wheels are powered.

And traditionally this means a nice long transmission running from the engine to the rear wheels, which would necessarily get in the way of a feature like this.

The Doka is a VW "Type 2" in pickup trim. Type 2's are rear engine, RWD by default.

So there's no transmission to get in the way, and they could use the space!

The gear tunnel wouldn't be possible on the AWD variant of a Type 2 because there was a transmission running from the rear engine to the front wheels reintroducing the transmission limitation.
