Finally had a day to rip up from Denver at 5,280’ up over Berthoud Pass at 11,307’ elevation and down into Tabernash to our cabin which is roughly at 8,300’. Covered roughly 90 miles each way and a ton of elevation gains and losses.

Berthoud Pass crosses the Continental Divide and has 10+ hairpin turns plus a bunch of high speed S curves. We’ve driven it roughly 40-60 times per year both winter and summer in both a Cayenne GTS, highly modified Audi S7, and other vehicles so a great litmus test for the Rivian.

The Rivian shows her heft and height as compared to the sports cars, but otherwise is no slouch and has way more in it than I was willing to press on the first high alpine outing. I was not comfortable pushing it to breaking the rubber loose but will eventually get there. Regardless, anyone I passed was shocked to see a truck blowing by.

The rule of thumb for ICE vehicles is 3% horsepower loss for every 1k’ elevation above sea level, so we feel it in all our vehicles plus a ski boat, especially above 8k’. No such loss for EV’s so I was a bit blown away by the responsiveness in the high mountains. It took awhile to get used to one pedal driving at speed in the curves and hills but it quickly became intuitive. I just set it in Sport and rocked.

Will report some basic wattage and mileage for both climb and descent sections. Overall was thrilled with the R1T and look forward to both heavy snow driving and towing the boat up and over the same route next season.

Started with 100% SOC at 286 miles range in all-purpose mode. Covered total 187 actual miles, ton of elevation gains and losses, and finished day at 39% SOC with 116 mile range remaining. Carried a few items in half closed tonneau so not completely aero and drove without efficiency in mind.

First half of trip up from Denver including some errands covered in Tabernash was roughly 95 miles and 6,027’+ of elevation gains and approx 3k’ descent after Berthoud Pass. I was in Sport mode for roughly 18 miles and heavy foot up the section from I-70 up to the top of the pass, and then in traffic and all-purpose mode the rest of the route.

On the way back covered roughly 92 miles, 3k elevation ascent, and 6k+ descent so the kWh used was quite different as expected.

Below shows steepest downhill from top of Berthoud Pass to east side of Denver once foothills flatten out. Tons of regen, pretty cool.

The R1T is a joy and once she gets snow mode, should be the perfect CO rig.

Moose, congrats on your truck and the successful roadtrip. I'm particularly interested your opinion of the 22" ATs as, my config appears to be very similar to yours (different color, otherwise same) but I will end up with the 22"s where I've always figured 20"s. Winter will be a bit different for me this year...

Take care...

Thanks for the trip report! I bet lots of CO folks who frequent Winter Park will love to hear about how well it did…not that we should be surprised!

Congrats on the R1! That trip looks great. I drove there a couple of years ago. Hope to go back with a R1, once I get it. Thanks for sharing.

@Khaos and @Ravenron, the twenny twens are pretty impressive, absolute pavement pounders with no harshness even in sport, and actually look to have semi-decent siping. Their range also seems under rated. Also did some mild trail and had no issues even at full 45 PSI though puncture resistance may be an issue. The wheels themselves are a bit flat with no real dish or concave presumably for aero design, so they may be exposed to trail scrapes.

While the snow ratings for the Rivian 22" tires are only above average, I'm actually way more concerned about regen braking in winter with no snow mode yet for the Rivians which is a whiff for an adventure rig. Surely we will have snow mode in an OTA update by November, eh Rivian?

Temps during the trip yesterday were mid 70's at lower elevation and 50F at top of pass. It will be interesting to log range loss at subzero temps and with a tow load, both will be updated here later as we get into those seasons.

@mitchel674, you should have no issue with the MC Prostar towing given its lighter setup, lower aero profile, and flatter terrain. While range loss while towing is real my guess is you won't have the same incremental loss as the TFL tow reports given their larger tow rigs and ascents. We have a 2015 MC X10 which fully loaded is around 6,100 lbs on the trailer. Will definitely report back here next season on the boat tow on this same route. Gratuitious pic of home port Lake Granby, CO, headwaters of the CO River.

Great pics! Black wheels look awesome. I may try that if one of those vinyl companies make sets for the 22s

So glad to read your post as we just returned from CO a few weeks ago. Being my first trip there and to those elevations and quick changes, driving an ICE car (modified S3) I noticed the power drop was SUBSTANTIAL. My normal 350hp @ 3,500 lbs. pass without downshifting, required me to downshift at least 1, usually 2 gears and, to keep it about 1.5K higher in the rpm range to keep the turbo moving enough air to make any useful power.

My first thoughts were, "man I wouldn't notice any of this in the Rivian" :p

Awesome pics, great looking rig.

That steep downhill efficiency section is pretty kewl to see too.

Thanks for sharing results in segments as well. :)

Did a near identical run today up and down in winter conditions, 20” Rivian wheels and tires, temps 0F - 20F, about 5” of snow on top of plowed mountain roads.

Efficiency dropped quite a big both up and down due largely to lower temps.

Uphill winter run was 1.59 mi/kWh and 53.2 KWh total vs uphill summer run at 2.06 mi/kWh and 46.5 kWh total.

Downhill winter return was 2.5 mi/kWh and 32.2 kWh total vs summer 3.15 mi/kWh and 29.5 kWh total.

Fine line between feathering regen vs pucker factor with downhill exposure.
