Was anyone able to confirm if the tailgate can be open and lift gate locked to allow certain long items to extend beyond the interior of the R1S? Anyone have success moving plywood sheets in it? Or if the other option is to only have fhe tailgate closed but lift gate open (with long items sticking out the back), how well did this work?

Bumping this. I'm guessing somebody has loaded the cabin with long items that extend beyond the tailgate / lift gate. Any feedback would be appreciated.

I tried today. The liftgate will not latch without the tailgate being closed (unless I'm missing something). That being said, you CAN drive with long items extending out of the back with the tailgate open. The only issue is that you need to manually secure the lift gate. This can be done by paracord or bungee or something, tied on one end to the latch at the bottom of the liftgate and on the other end to either the tailgate latch or one/both of the cargo tie-downs. You may also need to use a towel or cushion between the liftgate and the lumber/whatever you are hauling so as to protect the paint.

It can be done, but it’s not a good idea. You will be tying down the liftgate. Given how badly most are misaligned, that may be a bad idea as leaving it unsupported could lead to something getting torqued. Strong likelihood of scratching or tearing up armrests on third row seats. Bear in mind, 48 inch width is only at the bottom. Vehicle sides round inward as you go toward the roof closing the distance to less than 48.
