Had a minor heart attack when my wife and I (filing jointly) both received individual letters from the IRS a few days after that, but they turned out to just be paper notice that our 2022 tax return had been modified and that a check had been cut for the refund amount :whew:

The whole process was way easier than I imagined
Same thing happened to me, but I got the IRS notice before receiving the physical check. 😂

They delivered my R1T May 2023. I filed my tax amendment 6/2 and received the checked 7/7.

Sorry to jump in on the end of this, but if I am taking delivery of a 2022 pre-order, that I had signed the purchase agreement for (non-refundable $100 of my $1000 back in August 2022 or whenever that was), sometime in 1H next year, do I still file an amended 2022 return? Or what tax work should I be looking at for this?
Yes. You amend ‘22 return as if you entered agreement to buy before IRA was signed into law on 8/16/2022. Precisely the intention of the purchase agreement and instruction to enter 8/15 as the service date. Find and revisit email from Rivian regarding IRS guidance. It is brief but very clear.

I filed my federal return before taking delivery and have since filed my amended return, which was accepted right away (about a month ago now) but I still haven't received the $7,500 refund.

I know many people received their refund pretty quickly on their original return, but wondering if any others have filed an amended return and received the refund yet. I tried tracking it through the IRS website but it doesn't like my inputs :(
how and where do you file a return before delivery?

All you need is a VIN. I wouldn’t recommend it, in case something happens and you end up taking delivery of a different vehicle/VIN.

Yes, definitely don't file your return with the tax credit before taking delivery. My post was referring to the fact that I had already filed my taxes for 2022 (without any EV tax credit) before taking delivery of my R1T, so needed to file an amended return to capture the tax credit.

Gotcha thanks...I understand that next year will be a rebate vs a tax credit..

Another successful tax credit claim:
7/23 - '22 amendment filed via TurboTax
7/24 - Amendment accepted
7/31 - IRS status checking page showed "Received"
8/7 - Status showed "Adjusted"
8/15 - Received check from Treasury for pre-IRA credit + interest

Sorry for this likely repetitive question, but I'm about to confirm my R1S build and still have to decide about getting PPF or not!
Have any of you, who received a refund, had a purchase price > $80,000?
What exactly counts towards the $80,000 limit for the federal tax credit, and do accessories like PPF or the wall charger count?

The following is broad-strokes. If you still have questions, best to ask a tax pro.

Do you have a binding purchase agreement from Rivian? sent from them and e-signed before the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) was signed into law on 8/16/2022?

If yes:

- None of the IRA's credit eligibility rules and limits apply
- No income cap
- No battery sourcing requirement
- No vehicle price cap. Load it up to over $100k, it doesn't matter.
- To get full $7500 credit, you must have at least that much in tax liability for the year you are reporting or amending. If you had less total liability, then you'll get less (the credit is "upto $7500" and not a rebate for that amount).
- In case of audit, you need to be able to produce a copy of the binding agreement.
- In order to claim this credit, you'll need a VIN and you'll need to enter 8/15/2022 as your in-service date (exactly what IRS's guidance says to do).

If no:
- All IRA rules apply (income cap, vehicle price cap, battery sourcing)
- Because of battery sourcing, and until rules change or until Rivian can make changes on their battery supply, max credit allowed by Treasury is $3750
- Treasury did not rule on battery sourcing until mid-April. So, there was a transitory period before that where folks were exempt. I don't recall exact date or cutoff. But you can look that up on your own. If you've yet to take delivery, this exemption doesn't apply to you, since you need a VIN to file credit claim.

Thanks so much, super helpful and detailed !!!
I have a binding purchase agreement from Rivian and meet all the other requirements you mentioned. I somehow completely missed that the $80,000 cutoff does not matter for people with a binding purchase agreement from Rivian.

Found the
https://fueleconomy.gov/feg/tax2022.shtml
Purchase Scenario
"... Entered into a written binding contract to purchase vehicle before August 16, 2022, but did not take possession of the vehicle until on or after August 16, 2022."

Yes, the binding agreement is your "pass go, ignore IRA, collect up to $7500" card. Exactly why Rivian offered it. If you did your taxes with TurboTax, the process of amending is so easy that you'll think you did something wrong.

For the grandfathered credit there is not a vehicle purchase price limit IIRC.

But that will be with the new IRA rules. People filing amended are using the old rules where they get the full refund and no income or MSRP limits.
