I wouldn't mind buying a 6 month old R1S, if it costs me 40k
. I am fine leaving the dentist as-is. If the insurance totals it, that is.

But how much of this issue is “EVs” vs how they are designed and manufactured, and availability of parts and repair facilities? OPs damage has nothing do with the battery or drive train. Drop a V6 in the front and a gas tank in the back and I bet R1S/T would be equally expensive to repair with this type of damage.I mentioned before on here I was parked near repair yard in the Bay Area and there were a good dozen Tesla's there, all with minor dings and scrapes. I assumed it was a cheaper panel body shop so asked the dude who was walking around. He said they were all totaled. Complete insurance write off. I couldn't believe it. Talk about waste.
So when I hear stories like the OP's and this below, and then factor in higher insurance costs, registration, tire wear ($500 for one new 20" AT) I'm gonna say it again: EVs vs ICE ain't the slam dunk we all like to think.

I would be more curious about a rear off-set accident. I would imagine a rear impact is no different than a standard F150. But a rear off-set, with any impact to that axle.. I bet its a complete write off.I’d be curious to see how much more a rear ended F150 lightning would be over an ICE F150.
I really want EVs to win but man….insurance rates are killing me…gone up 40% in my year of ownership. The USA will be the last to fall in line because of expense and the growing poor in this country.I mentioned before on here I was parked near repair yard in the Bay Area and there were a good dozen Tesla's there, all with minor dings and scrapes. You said it, fat chance but if I'm honest, I wouldn't want the Gov't involved. They just f#*k it up somehow and we'll end up paying more.I think that a new business model of sky high premiums and totalling cars is the new normal and will creep into the ICE market as well. ..Unless government authority steps in to prevent it and in this political climate fat chance on that.
I have yet to see any evidence that Rivian is making patch panels. I know they're a startup and have a lot on their plate trying to turn a profit but if they don't get repair and insurance costs under control, people are going to be increasingly reluctant to buy a Rivian.Assuming Rivian is making patch panels for the rear quarter, anyway...
It is all a numbers game for the insurance company. They look at the residual value of the crashed vehicle verses the cost of repair and they go with what cost them less.I mentioned before on here I was parked near repair yard in the Bay Area and there were a good dozen Tesla's there, all with minor dings and scrapes.
