The last few days I have been 100% in AWD mode with about 70% Sport mode low and 30% AP mode standard. Temps were mostly in the 50's and the winds were pretty strong, low to mid teens gusting to mid 20's and almost 30. For the most part I couldn't catch a break with them. My first longer run was with them pretty much on the nose.

My 2nd to last run I got the benefit of a quartering tailwind, but I spent a fair amount of time on the highway running close to 80 as well.

On both long stretches I set the cruise when on the highway to 71 mph and maintained that best I could. I was in Sport low when on the highway.

I also had rain to deal with as well. I tag those in red in case you are interested. Even when the rain stopped, the roads were wet for a lot of the day. I didn't run any main heat but I had the seat heaters on and off throughout the day.

The first part of the day was in town with stop-and-go driving, which turned out to be more efficient than I thought it would be. The battery had been charging for a few hours, so it was up in the 80s. Most of the driving was with the Comma.ai so using the ACC a lot. There were definitely a few times I did a little rolled some coil as I ended up running a Mercedes-Benz's AMG's SL63.

He would have taken me if I hadn't been in sport mode on the 2nd run. First run, he clearly wasn't ready for me as I don't think he thought the truck would be quick. I was in AP mode anyway, which was quicker than whatever he was in. He obviously didn't use race start mode for his first launch. I heard his car was holding steady at about 3k+ for our rematch, so I knew he was ready and using race start mode. Where is Gen1 launch mode when you need it? So it was just sport mode for me. I have to give credit where due, that AMG SL63 was extremely quick. If we had run more than about 0-60 or 70 mph, for sure, we would have pulled me. That thing sounded great, but the R1T was SBD for the win. Where is the G2 quad motor when you want one?

Anyway, given the weather, the efficiency was pretty solid. The traction was very good. There were serious rains last night with mud in lots of places and still some flooding. The tires did great. The launches were pretty good. What a great truck overall if it wasn't for the damn wind noise at higher speeds. The headwinds, combined with driving 70mph+, made for a lot more noise as the airspeeds were in the 90-90+ mph range. This is the biggest issue I have with this truck on a daily basis.

For the stretch where I could go 70 mph for about 10 mile , I was at 2.2-2.25 mpk with the headwinds and rain. That is the 3rd run below. For reference, a friend of mine who just got a 2024 dual large, was at about 2.56 running 70 mph, but no rain, and I don't think as strong of headwinds either. His truck has factory 21's on it.

You are a library sir! Looks like you have mastered the tyre analysis. Why not start focusing on the wind noise issue now? I will be following closely. Cheers.

I totally gave up on the wind noise of my quad r1s. I think I tried basically everything people on here suggested and barely improving.

Thanks. Hopefully it will help others. I had plans to work on the wind noise this week, but it has been cold and rainy. So if I lay down new molding, it might not stick long-term. It really spoils the enjoyment of the truck. I think Rivian limits test drives to 80 mph so you won't see how bad it can really get. Not to mention, 80 mph is really only about 78, so just below the threshold where it seems to really get bad for me.

Now that I think about all the new ones I test drove, they all had it in varying degrees. It isn't terrible at 70, but at 80, I can't stand it. That is windspeed, so 70 mph with a headwind, and I am right in the range where it is almost intolerable. I actually check the winds forecast before I drive anywhere long distance now and sometimes adjust my route to lessen the wind noise if I'll have a strong headwind. WTF Rivian?

We should compare notes on what you've done so far Lance. I took mine in and they did some stuff but it really didn't help. I've reset the windows a bunch of times. I put a little bit of round tubing along the windshield but the gap is so uneven it only fits part of the way. I've put tubing behind the driver's door window seal which didn't make much of a difference if any.

I am pretty sure the noise is coming from the A pillar and along the windshield. My assumption is the area around the A pillar is more turbulent than it was designed as maybe their QC was lacking (and still is). I come from an aeronautical engineering background and this stuff just ticks me off.

I am at the point where I will put little yarn tufts to visually see what is going on with the airflow in those areas since I don't have access to a wind tunnel. That should at least visually give me an idea of what is going on so I can try to solve for it. The problem is I need someone to drive along beside and video it for the ones I can't see from the cockpit. I think some small vortex generators might help but want to see where to put them.

A side benefit, besides reducing noise, will be improved efficiency. When you hear that turbulent air, energy is being wasted. So if I can reduce the noise, it will be a win/win.

Here is a concise website to help understand what I plan to do. It will take some time to set it all up but I may try doing small sections on the area where I think there are issues. I can't have any rain and preferably no wind, or at least steady winds from one direction that I can just drive straight into.

If I have time, I really want to get to the bottom of this. If I didn't live in a state where you spend a lot of time at higher speeds, it wouldn't be so bothersome. On some days it really wants to make me sell my truck already. If I had known how bad it would be, I might not have bought a Rivian at all. I haven't driven one yet that doesn't have it. The noise does tell me when my efficiency is going to take a real hit. Once I hear the noise at a certain level, I know my efficiency is going to be at or below 2.0 mpk. That happens to be about 75 mph airspeed.

Tim,

I brought it in to the SC at the beginning and not sure what they did, it only improved slightly. I can't seem to isolate where it is coming from. So far, I have did this and a few other things

https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/threads/wind-noise-solved-at-last-using-tube-rubber-seal.17797/

I also done the gaps on the windshield area, and also the triangle area as well. The improvement is minimal. It doesn't help to live in North Texas, where it is windy 6 days out of the week either. I asked the service technician if panel gaps slight misalignment could cause the wind noise? and doesn't really get a definitive answer.
It is annoying but I guess, I am used to it. My dual R1T 's wind noise is much less than my quad R1S.

Well now that the tire size change thingy is implemented, I finally pulled the trigger and ordered a set of these tires. The OE Pirelli's are at the wear bars now anyway so it's not like I'm tossing good tires out but definitely excited to not have the roaring sound of the stock tires anymore.

They get installed on Thursday.

Just an update on efficiency on this tire. I have about 1400 miles on it and it is at 2.04 kWh. All purpose and auto height . Ride and comfort are very similar to the general grabbers and OEM 21".
18k miles on general grabber at 2.32
16k miles on the OEM 21" at 2.30

Imo. This tires is more of an AT with the comfort ride of an AS.

Thanks for sharing. How fast are you driving?

Rivian shows a bit of hit for these compared to their other more efficient tires but you are seeing over 10%.

To see anything around your overall average on a daily basis I had to go back to freezing temps. I was at 1.9 for the day and the tires were practically brand new. I had some fairly high speeds that day. I was playing in the snow where I could as well if I recall correctly.

My wife normally drives to work and home total around 45 miles a day. Mostly highway miles. George bush and tollway north to Plano. She drives around 5 miles above speed limit . The past two days she got around 1.85!!!! if I remembered correctly, the general grabber a starts to increase in efficiency around 800 miles broke in.
We are ok with it so far, just hope the efficiency would improve a little more. We don't really drive out town much so it doesn't really matter . We love the way it looks on the R1s.

If I remembered correctly, one of the member here was the first few people that tried this tires and he got around 1.8 for a long time until it improved after a few thousand miles

I would agree it takes longer for these tires to break in but once they do the numbers go up quite a bit.

I thought I'd post a quick update. I am somewhere between 2.6 and 3k miles. Not sure exactly but thought I'd post my Electrafi data for the day. It was windy as heck today. On my first trip I had a nice tailwind at a steady 10 mph gusting to about 15. On that stretch my I was over 3.0 mpk at a steady 70. I'll update my post later when I can add the photos.

The last 4 runs, I had a headwind, and the very last drive it I was on the highway and it really impacted me as it increased. It was 20 mph gusting to 30, pretty much right on the nose. Coming back with that strong headwind right on my nose, I was at 2.47 mpk.

Today, I decided to pretend I was driving a Gen 2 truck, and I pretty much drove in conserve mode wherever it made sense. Pretty much getting on and off the freeways, I ran it in conserve mode most of the time, but took off fairly gently at lights. Temps started out in the 60s and climbed to the 70s.

I was at 2.79 for the day, and I drove about 70 miles. I set the cruise at 71 mph on the highway and tried not to draft anyone. I was in conserve/low on the highway and conserve/standard when on secondary roads. I didn't run the AC, but I ran the fan, and I had a large car fridge plugged in with an actual compressor to cool it. It is about a 50-quart one, and I ran it for about 2 hours.

I think these tires have definitely gotten better with more miles. My overall mpk is at 2.37 currently with these tires. I've learned to try and not ever stop this truck. All that mass uses up so much energy to get it rolling again. Even rolling up to a light at 5 mph can make a noticeable difference compared to stopping and taking off again.

As always, I bring the receipts (data). You can see the mileage readings and match them up to the Electrafi screenshot above and see they match up. The first one photo below is my run with a tailwind that was weaker than the headwind that was almost double the tailwind on the run below.

I set the cruise at 71 mph both so that it would be a true 70 mph according to the GPS. As always, the TC reads about 1 mph slower for the average. The second one show 68 mph I had to slow down briefly but I went faster later to try and compensate for it.

For me the efficiency has been pretty solid. I was surprised at how good it was running around in conserve mode. I still like my fast launches but I might use conserve mode a bit more. I don't think my efficiency is that far behind a Gen 2 truck when driven this way. Anyhoo I didn't buy the the GY's for efficiency. I still love their traction, ride comfort, handling and noise levels. The fact that they look amazing on the truck is just a massive bonus.

Right now for how these tires are, they have moved into 2nd place of my all time favorite tires for every day use. Michelin Pilot Sport 4s are my current favorite that ore on my Plaid. They pair amazingly well with that car for an all around summer street tire. I got the Rivian for the cold. The GY's have so far met, or exceeded, my expectations to date. Still the only remaining question is longevity. I am still shocked given the tread design, that all the time I've bumped the speed limiter, they are still smooth and no vibrations. Wear seems to be pretty even so far as well. I do want to have my alignment checked and see if the can set the specs in low which is where I use my truck a lot.

Well, with 800 miles on my new Territories, I had a rapid decompression yesterday on the highway. 0 psi by the time I pulled over. At first I thought I hit some road debris, but I think actually it was a large nail that I must have collected earlier and it got flung out.

At any rate, the hole is pretty clean and nearly dead center and deep in the tread. Good plug candidate.

I just applied a gummy worm plug, holding pressure so far, off the truck. First territory on this thread with a plug? I'll report back if it doesn't hold.
