BUT - have stumbled across bad experiences, poor reviews, and the most recent battery dead issues. Not sure if I should consider my decision.
I took delivery 3 weeks ago. I did run into my charge port not opening or closing fully. If I had to drive an hour to Brooklyn from Jersey it would really have annoyed me just a few weeks in. But getting a service request through the app was super easy and now they are sending a mobile truck to fix it.

With any new product it’s expected to have some issues early on. I also have a Hyundai Ioniq 5 and my 12v battery died 18 months in. So issues will come up even with established companies.

A few things Rivian did still annoy me like no 12v power under the dash, no CarPlay, but there are workarounds that are not showstoppers. The pros significantly outweighs the cons.

I will never go back to ICE cars. EVs just drive so nice and smooth and quick and am saving a bunch not having to put gas in.

6 months zero issues. It somewhat comes down to risk/reward, You Only Live Once decision. If you are looking for 100% guarantee of a perfect experience, you may or may not have that. If you can accept a bit of risk of possible service challenges, the reward is amazing.

If you’re like me, you’ll be delighted.

We've had our R1S since February. 14000 miles. It's been a delight. No problems at all. I LOVE driving it!!!

I‘ve only had my R1S for a few weeks, but I have been very, very impressed. Besides the over the top performance, I have been really pleased with the fit and finish and quality materials used, especially in the interior. The technology is also first rate. I have driven many exotic cars and I would chose my R1S over all of them.

Funny just last night returning from mass (holy day of obligation) in a nice white out, I said to my wife, that our R1S hasn’t exhibited any of the issues that I see people posting on the forum. We love the R1S, do it, keeping in mind there will be some minor quirks for a new production vehicle.

Getting my R1S in a month, giving up the Model 3. Need a proper SUV and too damn impressed by R1S, initial reviews, owner reviews, and everything about it.

BUT - have stumbled across bad experiences, poor reviews, and the most recent battery dead issues. Not sure if I should consider my decision.

If I were to consider other SUVs, it'd be the Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro (which is 78k) or just, for the price point a Honda Pilot Trailsport (50k).

My concerns are, what are the maintenance costs associated with being a first-time Rivian owner. ( wouldn't say I have the liberty to keep cash aside for a startup luxury car issues). A friend of mine teased recently saying Rivian is only for rich people. lol.

If any advise, opinions - would take them all. Really want Rivian to succeed and the R1 vehicles to be game-changers in the industry.
TLDR most of the comments.

We have the R1T and love it. Besides the initial issue with the headlight system (about a month of ownership in June), it has been perfect.

I know a lot of people who have the R1S have mentioned fit and finish issues with panel gaps and paint issues. I would just walk around and take notice of all the imperfections and if there are any, make note of it and mention it to the guide, and make an appointment right then to get it corrected.

It is the best car I’ve owned since my first car a dearly loved 86 Corolla I got handed down from me by my older brother. I love it! Could something tricky or annoying happen? Sure, life is risky. It’s a car. But I’ve had the time of my life don’t overthink it and these forums can get a bit overboard with complainers spamming every little issue they have.

14+ months and 14k miles. Two recalls and a window recalibration all performed by mobile service in my garage. Maybe a bit of wind noise above 65mph but no real issues.

Thanks everyone for your feedback! This is very helpful. Hope I am able to post positive reviews about the R1S once I get it as well.

11k miles in under 5 months on my R1T and I've paid about $100 total to charge (saved about $2500 in gas) and still love driving it every time. I've driven a few other EVs including a rental (Volvo C40 Recharge) during service for few minor issues with squeaks and wind noise at speed, and when I went back to driving my Rivian it felt 1000x better than the other EVs, nevermind any ICE vehicle. Definitely no regrets buying this.

Once it's close to going out of warranty (60k on quad motor!) I will have to consider my options, but I'm not worrying about that for some time, just enjoying every minute of it.

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
Others have stated this more eloquently. The Forums are not an accurate representation of overall ownership experience.

1) We have pragmatic and vocal early adopters here, and most are very transparent about the issues they’ve experienced. Particularly active members.
2) We have a lot (like, a ridiculous number) of inbound trolls doing 1-post hit jobs with no follow-up, and we take the bait every time (thereby amplifying the negativity)
3) Non-forum people will often come to a forum looking to commiserate and/or find a solution to a problem in earnest
4) Non-forum people will rarely go to a forum to share a positive experience

Therefore, the data here will have bias.

I try to put myself in category 1 and call out issues and positives of my truck, but admittedly will post more readily about a problem than a happy moment.

TL;DR - happy moments have totally dominated my ownership experience. I adore this truck.

I have had my R1S for around 2 weeks and was in the same boat you were after constantly reading horror stories.

As of now, I am completely happy that I still went forward. The car is amazing and so much fun to drive. I do not regret my decision at all and it feels like you step into the future every time you drive it.

I have never driven anything as smooth as the R1S. Hope you go forward with your purchase.
