Climate XChange's 9th Annual EV Raffle is well past the halfway point. Ticket sales for the February 28 drawing end in a month, if we haven't sold out. There are just over 2000 tickets left out of 5000 - get your tickets today!

Rivian R1T R1S Get your ticket to win any EV before they sell out! 9th-previous-raffle-winners-jpe

Ticket sales end on Wednesday, February 26 at 2pm Eastern - if we haven't sold out already. We will livestream the drawing for winners on Friday, February 28 at 3pm Eastern, going live at 2pm so those interested can watch while our auditors observe us loading the drum.

Our Grand Prize Winner can choose any of nearly 60 EVs on the market priced up to $120,000, with your choice of model and options! Plus, we pay all of the taxes on the Grand Prize, so there are no strings attached if you win. For $120K you can choose a Rivian or Tesla with nearly every option, a well-appointed Macan EV, BMW, or Mercedes, or something different like a fully loaded Hyundai Ioniq 5N performance hot hatch! And federal and state taxes (which can amount to as much as $60K) are on us!

Each ticket gives you three chances to win:
  • Grand Prize: Your choice of a fully-customized EV, priced up to $120,000, with all taxes paid by Climate XChange
  • 2nd Prize: $12,500
  • 3rd Prize: $7,500
Your ticket purchases help advance state-level climate policy - a win for the climate whether or not you win!

Climate XChange is a Boston-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, rated 4/4 Stars by Charity Navigator and Gold Transparency by Guidestar/Candid. Raffle ticket sales support CXC’s mission to achieve a rapid and equitable transition towards a zero-emissions economy by advancing state climate policy.

P.S. Tickets cannot be purchased while you’re physically located in Alabama, Arkansas, California, Hawaii, Utah, or Washington state, but you can still buy a ticket if you’re traveling to an eligible state during our raffle. Since the restriction is based on your location while making the purchase, you can still enter your home address in a restricted state on your ticket. So, if you have any upcoming travel plans, make sure to add purchasing a ticket to your itinerary! If you have any questions, please reply here or send a DM and we will respond.

I had a question about whether the winner had to travel to Boston to pick up their car.

No need to travel to Boston, if you choose a directly sold vehicle like Rivian/Tesla/Lucid we order it and you pick it up at their closest delivery location. If it's a dealer-sold vehicle we will work with a dealer in your area. Depending on location we will send someone to take photos/video of the delivery or ask you to do it and send to us, so that we can show potential ticket buyers that the raffle is legit.

So you collect $1.25MM and give away $140k?

wow, I need to start a raffle…
They will give away ~250k total. So yeah, this is a great way for them to collect up to 1M USD.

For us, it's tempting, it's like donating $250 to a cause with the chance of earning a prize. I never liked these types of raffles but that's mainly because I've never NEVER ever won anything in my life. Even if I buy 4999 tickets for this raffle, I can guarantee I'll loose 🤣

That's why they call it a fundraiser. The intent is to raise funds for Climate XChange, a 501(c)(3) climate nonprofit with a mission to achieve a rapid and equitable transition towards a zero-emissions economy by advancing state climate policy. The net $ raised, under $1M, help fund our offerings like the State Climate Policy Dashboard, a free resource available to anyone - check it out! It tracks over 60 climate policies in 7 policy areas across all 50 states, allows line-by-line comparisons of up to four states at once, highlights best in class policies, and links to the actual legislation. Also our free of charge State Climate Policy Network, 15,000+ state and municipal level climate officials, researchers, activists, legislators, professors, and others who receive regular newsletters and reports, webinars and legislative updates. Our staff respond to member queries and help connect members in need with others who have relevant experience. We have found over the years that despite the fact that most climate action takes place at the state level, there is limited organized support for the players involved, and we try to address that gap.

As @savethemanual pointed out, we also pay up to $60K in taxes along with the $120K for the EV and $30K in cash prizes (there was an additional Early Bird prize of $10K, drawn on January 3 from the tickets sold through December 31). Then there are the 3% card payment fees and 5% MA raffle tax on all ticket sales. We have a large marketing budget for Google Ads, YouTube insertions, sponsored articles and vendor fees for forums like this one. We have expenses for web hosting, e-commerce and geofencing software, our Boston raffle permit, etc., plus part-time technology and graphics/design consultants who put together and maintain the website. Finally we pay attorney and auditor fees, to ensure we are doing everything above board. Several of our staff spend part of their paid time running the raffle, while as a board member I donate my time.

And we incur most of this cost no matter how many tickets we sell - the only exceptions are the variable expenses of card fees and raffle tax. Climate XChange is on the hook for the $180K grand prize as soon as we sell the first ticket! Last year we didn't quite sell out due to an eligibility change, though in most recent years we have - but it often comes right down to the wire. So @rivianbuff if you want to raise money for a nonprofit, go ahead and start a raffle, but I'd advise you to stock up on antacids and blood pressure medicine beforehand - it's not for the faint of heart.

FYI, Climate XChange is rated highly by two big nonprofit watchdogs, Charity Navigator and Guidestar, so you can be confident that even if you don't win, your money is going to a well run organization. And the drawing is transparently live streamed with our auditors in the room checking everything, so you can be sure it is fairly run: tune in February 28th at 3pm Eastern - 2pm to watch us methodically load the ticket drum.

Thanks to those who have or will enter the raffle - we're a little behind track so we appreciate the support.

As you put it, it's a donation with some fun involved - the chance to win pretty big, at much better odds than a lottery.

Over the years I think most of our winners have bought 1-5 tickets, but we very much appreciate those who buy 10 or 20! A guy a few years back made multiple purchases of 10 or 20 tickets over the course of the raffle until he had accumulated over 100! Our Executive Director called him to make sure he was ok and was doing it with intent - he said he really wanted to support Climate XChange, and hoped he'd win a Tesla. I was hoping he would win something, but in the end he didn't win the car or any of the four cash prizes we were offering.

NOTE: though we are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, raffle ticket purchases are not tax-deductible because of the value of the chance to win. Though the guy above probably got some tax relief by accounting for his purchases as gambling losses, which is legitimate but only worthwhile at scale.

If one elects for the cash option, are the potential taxes covered also?

Thanks for your question, @savethemanual. We don't cover taxes on any of the cash prizes - we would deduct withholding of 24% for IRS and 5% for MA.

Our goal with the raffle and grand prize from the beginning has been to increase awareness of climate and EVs, and put an additional EV on the road. We pay the taxes on the car to eliminate a big obstacle to doing so. It's not so exciting to win a car if you have to pay a big tax bill to receive the prize. But it's not cheap - on a $120K car we will end up paying an additional $60K in fees and taxes, because any taxes we pay on the winner's behalf are also subject to taxes...

We're just hitting 3000 out of the 5000 tickets allotted - probably 500 or so ahead of where we were at this time in last year's raffle. In the next few days we will likely add this ticket sales "speedometer" to the raffle site. We usually wait until we're well past halfway. Here's a snapshot of where we are right now - just for Rivian Forums!
