Haven't seen anyone else post a video of it, so I figured I would, but the dynamic matrix lights on the Gen 2 are super cool. Not only do they cut a notch out of your light pattern for oncoming traffic, but they also animate the high beams on and off!

EDIT

Here's that video promised of the Dynamic lighting in action! There are two clips, incidentally on the same stretch of road of the lighting working on a vehicle I'm following

I have been using them in rural Maine and I can say they are much more effective than my Model Y's similarly pitched "adaptive headlights".

I, like many others I’m sure, would love to see the dynamic matrix lights in normal situations as well (ie. Notched light pattern for oncoming traffic, normal driving pattern, etc).

What are your thoughts on normal use? Or overall visibility?

Anyone have experience with both Gen 1 and Gen 2?

Too bad that my Gen1 not only doesn't have this feature but the headlight is so badly aligned to make it hard to drive at nigh in semi-rural areas (unless you always use the high beams).
I'm in line to get the recall performed by the SC.

The jury is out for me. I'm taking it on faith that it is useful for oncoming traffic, but seeing the constant adjustments while I'm driving can be a bit distracting sometimes. It's definitely taking some getting used to. I'd love to see what it looks like to someone facing the lights.

If you slow it down frame by frame you see other things that these lights can see.... 😲
haha nice one! What video did that come from? I maybe I should go to the graveyard and replicate lol

I drove a gen 1 for 2.5 weeks before taking home my gen 2. I would say raw light output is about the same between the 2 generations. Gen 2, however, will turn on the high beams in more situations than gen 1, since it can notch out other cars.

The matrix notch is really impressive but certainly not perfect. The "pixels" are a bit on the large side, so depending on distance/positioning of the oncoming cars the notch is sometimes quite a bit larger than necessary. As the oncoming car moves, it also tends to be a bit laggy moving the notch. That being said, the notches are oversized enough that even if it lags in lining up, the oncoming car is never blinded.

Mind you, when I say "a bit laggy" I really mean "a bit". Things get blown out of propotion on the internet haha. It's not instant, but it's not more than a .3s delay by I would guess.

I'll see if I can get some dashcam footage of the notch working this weekend.

I personally don't find it too distracting. If you're in an aera that's not totally dark, one could probably drive along without noticing the notch. But Agreed, I'd love to see it from an oncoming car's perspective.

Is this something you can turn on and off?
Yes, in which case it just operates like gen 1 lights. But personally I LOVE the functionality. I find it adds to the experience much more than it destracts

I'm kind of curious to see the mechanism for it in action. Is it a physical shutter that is moved by servo motors, or is it actually matrix LEDs in there turning on and off?

I know in one previous car I had, the high beams were just a shutter that blocked the top portion of the single-beams when on low-beams, and the shutter retracted upward to allow the full beam when in high-beams.

The automatic leveling feature uses servos to physically move the headlight. But that's the only moving part of the headlights. The matrix high beam functionality are all solid state LED pixels. No moving parts for the high beams and cutting out the notch. Likewise the headlights have cornering functionality that move with the steering wheel. And this is also achieved with the solid state pixels

I have both. I really prefer the new lights.

The "before" and "after" effectiveness of the headlights after completing the recall was definitely noticeable and I can now drive in rural areas at night. Previously it was ridiculously bad.

That's good to know, thanks.
I'm looking forward to it

What I'm referring to here is the dynamic high beam. When a car is approaching a notch will appear around the oncoming vehicle so the high beams can continue operating everywhere else, without blinding other drivers. I've got some dashcam footage I will upload tonight to demonstrate
