What’s everyone best guess on the release date of the Gen 2 quad. My guess would be April with a change to the insensitive

I see them driving around all the time here in Sacramento, saw three (2x R1S & 1x R1T) driving around town here yesterday alone. Earlier this week in Truckee they were also thick on the ground so they seem to be selling fairly well.

Assuming that you're taking about the trip-motor only, there are at least 3 in Sacramento area.

Probably more in the Bay Area certainly lots more in SoCal, where I am. Still, in the big picture, what percentage of R1 sales are Tri-motor?

I own a gen 1 Quad because that's all they had at the time. Today, I were buying a R1S, definitely a dual motor, not Tri-motor.

I know some people are waiting for the quad and some wants the added performance. The question is is there enough of them to be profitable for Rivian?

Yes, I was just talking about the Tri. I’ve stopped counting the Gen 2 Duals I see each day here because there are just too many to keep track. In Sacramento, the total of Gen 2 Dual + Tri might have now overtaken the total of Gen 1 Quad + Dual.

I am a current gen1 quad owner and have a gen 2 quad preorder in. I’m a performance nut so this is the one for me. I agree that Rivian will probably not sell that many of these but the profit margin should be much higher for them. All things equal the extra motor is probably not costing them more than $5k. Also it’s the Halo vehicle and is meant to make a buzz. When all the videos start going around of it embarrassing super cars it helps build the brand even if the average person on the street can’t tell a quad apart. I also hope because only those of us that truly prioritize performance are going to shell out for the Gen 2 quad that maybe they will give us a few added performance related options

It's not the cost of parts for the quad. It's the non-recurring engineering, development, testing and validation, as well as assembly line changes for the quad. All the things I've mentioned needs to be amortized over the sale of vehicle and being profitable.

Clearly, if they amortize the cost over the entire R1 program, it's not significant. The problem is that already they are in the negative for every vehicle they sell. This just makes it worse.

If they actually get to positive gross margin for Q4, as they promised, doing the quad might make take it back into negative - which is why they have not introduced yet probably. Rivian must be hoping that the sales picks up in the Q1~Q2 to offset the quad intro.

From business perspective, having a new quad as the company flagship has marketing value. Financially, it probably will be a loss-leader for the entire R1 line, if they produce it.

Ask me 5 months ago; I would have cared and made a guess. Now, not so much.

The more I look at how much I got hammered with depreciation on my Model S Plaid (~50% in 2 years), the more I think the Tri and Quad will suffer the same. I don't mind spending money; I just don't want to light it on fire.

This may not be a popular opinion, but I don't think they did enough to beat the Cybertruck in the 0-60 sprint. It looks like it might have tied it. Given it has at least 200 hp more and a lot more torque, i am not overly impressed. I'd also like to see some 50-90 mph times and 1/8th mile times to see how it compares heads up with the G1 quad and some other vehicles.

Depreciations on high end EVs are brutal right now.

I can pickup a year or two old Taycan GTS for $70K~$80K, EQS for about $60K as well as Lucid Air. All at about 50% of new vehicle prices.

Most definitely Rivian will face a similar fate, especially when there are super low monthly leases on new EV SUVs.

Absolutely, I've been tracking Taycans for a while and they followed the Plaid very quickly. The only one seeming to defy that trend, at least a little bit is the Lucid Sapphire. In sheer dollars, the ones I've seen trade are losing about as much as a Model S Plaid but since the car costs more than twice as much, as a percentage, it isn't as bad.

At this point, if I did want a G2 quad, I'll likely let someone else enjoy the depreciation first. For a daily driver, I am pretty happy with the G1 quad's 0-60 times. I would definitely like more pull in the 60-130 range. Somewhere in the low 7's to high 6's would keep it entertaining to me.

I just looked at some random times for my Plaid and R1T for 60-90mph. Neither was anywhere near a full charge (~ 60%). My Plaid was twice as quick as the R1T; 1.7 vs 3.5. If the R1T would do this in the mid to upper 2's (2.5-2.8) it would be a lot more fun for me. I'd love to see some 60-90 times on the G2 quad.

Check out the pikes peak video. The G2 quad seems to be extremely lively in the upper end...

I think the acceleration difference at higher speeds on the G2 quad will be significant. As for 0-60, they're pushing the limits of traction.
