Has anyone else noticed, more recently, a real hard thud when the rear motor engages on/off in All-Purpose mode? I’ve never felt it this hard over the year of ownership. In 2024.51.02, this has been my biggest issue and I can’t seem to understand what changed in the motor configuration to create such a noticeable difference. It’s terrible at highway speeds.

Yes it’s true. There’s also a thread here already discussing it. We all hope they roll back the changes in a future update. It’s definitely much less refined now.

I never change modes at highway speeds, it never seemed like a good idea.

You don't need to for the thump to be there. Just cruise at 70 mph in all-purpose, hit the pedal and you'll feel the rear motor engage. This was introduced with the 2025.51 update.

That’s my point, I’m not changing any modes to cause it to occur.

If you toggle between snow and all purpose at 70 mph it will replicate the thump on command. I'm sure this is a known issue with Rivian. There are numerous posters who have made service center appointments because of it. A waste of money for Rivian.

We have the same problem. We told them it just recently started a couple weeks ago (15,000 miles, 10 months old R1T DM Gen 1 2023) but we did not attribute it at that time to the recent software update. When our truck was in the shop, they re-set/tightened the half-shaft, took it for a “test drive” and declared it all fixed. Been back for a few days, still have the same problem. Now reading this (and the other) threads I am opening another ticket, hopefully Rivian will do something to truly fix the problem if it is a software issue. Our truck was, as someone else stated, buttery smooth before on the highway. I don’t want to drive in “snow mode” or “sport mode” all the time to avoid this.

Following up on this thread. I had a mobile service appointment and did a drive with the technician on the highway. I was able to reproduce the behavior and we captured a diagnostic of the drive.

The technician reached out to me 24 hours later after he did some preliminary review of the results, before sending it to engineers. He found a fault in the rear motor, specifically the “Rear Motor Position Sensor Calibration Missing.” The fault showed there were not start/end values tied to the rear motor coding. All the data was missing.

We ran through the rear motor position sensor calibration, put the vehicle in drive and moved a few feet, then parked. Then did a hard reset. So far, no issues to report and the symptoms have stopped.

Wow, this is big. I did have a fault a few days before the clunk started, which coincidentally was when the software update dropped.
