It’s really weird behavior. As depicted in my last thread I was at 72.9%. All of sudden I lost 11.8% range, from 72.9% - 69.3%, 4.75kWh, all while “sleeping”! Charging started because I was plugged in and my set limit is 71%.

Can you put the battery capacity stats next to your SoC chart? I bet it’s doing something weird with the capacity rating of the vehicle. It has gotten very noisy on mine as well.

I drove after the charge but here you go.

Those snapshots are hard to reverse into. Much easier to look at the line graphs in home assistant for SoC and Capacity.

Ah our messages crossed.
Yes exactly what I expected. The system changed the capacity rating back up higher after a while and it resulted in your drop in SoC. We will need more longer term stats like that to understand the behavior better.

I guess Rivian is experimenting?

Maybe. Hard to guess. But definitely a significant change in behavior. I will keep analyzing that data as I get more details over time.

Quick update at the end of the weekend. The pattern is becoming more clear and understandable for the 51 firmware.
Initially derate the battery as fast or faster than energy is consumed: SoC is flat or increases slightly in the first 24h.
Then it flattens until approx 36h into parking because the lowered battery capacity is kept more or less constant.
Eventually physics catch up and the normal discharge rate of 0.7-1% happens, followed by an acceleration of discharge rate because the firmware is bringing the battery capacity slowly back up.

To an unknowing user it looks like there is no battery draining on day 1, little drain on day 2 and after that the drain increases but ultimately catches up with what has really been happening all the time: the car uses about 1kWh energy every day, and it can’t be hidden beyond the first 2 days.
Little side effect: Any drive or charge happening on day 1 or 2 looks worse, because the battery capacity rating distortion needs to be undone to reflect what is really going on.

I also noticed that charging to 70% now nets me about three less miles of range on the max pack. 267 instead of 270 after the last update.
Seems like dirty pool. But then vampire drain means the total efficiency was never where they said it was. You can't lose a third of the battery per month and have good efficiency.

Indian proverb: only the government cuts a foot off the bottom of your blanket, sews it to the top and says you have a longer blanket.
Rivian has entered the chat.

That's one way to stop all the conversations about VD.. keep moving the goalposts so the numbers don't make sense any longer.

FYI The estimated range is somewhat getting corrected but at times just goes off the rails. At some points the reported range drops by half before recovering with the next update. All that capacity manipulation seems to be throwing the range calculation off every so often.

My initial glances after the .47 (and .51) update were presuming that total capacity was related to battery temp. But perhaps not; or perhaps there are multiple factors including temp, time since last charge, etc. Though charging likely brings the temp up, but at the same time the gradual rise in capacity a day or two later doesn’t make sense unless you had a warm spell when collecting the later half of that data. Can you overlay battery temp and capacity with your home assistant data? I don’t see that I could do that in Electrafi.

This change initially felt like a realistic way of adjusting range estimates for battery temp, but now seems a little more sleight-of-hand regarding vampire drain. Which is funny, because my gen 2 had almost no drain before the update, so now I “gain” percent charge when sitting sometimes as others have alluded to on here. It’s just such a weird manipulation of the denominator to help us ignore the numerator…

That is one thing that the Rivian API currently does not provide: battery temp.
Have been thinking about how to capture it, but short of going on the CAN bus and capturing it with a tiny ESP32 chip, I have not yet found a way to do it.
might really put together a tiny ESP32 device for that and other data in the vehicle and upload it whenever there is WiFi available.

We could go the brute force manual check method several times a day. None of us have lives anyway.
