For the Gear Guard set-up, I tried for an hour to get the SanDisk 1TB USB Type C stick to work and the screen kept stating 'not fast enough', no matter which console port and with both types of re-booting. It is rated much higher than the Rivian requirements, including speed. Rivian telephone troubleshooting didn't help.

There was a post here that said SanDisk was having some issues with their larger storage units. I finally returned the SanDisk to Amazon ($85) and ordered the blue Samsung SSD T7 1TB from Walmart ($89). Plugged it in and it fired up without a hitch. The Samsung comes with a short cord so the unit doesn't stick out like the thumb drive. No need to buy a C Port to C Port cord. The Samsung is larger, but no big deal in the console area. The blue color stands out in the dark console hole. The screen automatically showed clips from earlier in the day when I hadn't added the Samsung storage. Hope this saves someone from this same time drain. Not sure why Rivian doesn't post which storage units work and which don't.

I installed the SanDisk 1 TB from Costco $79.99 plus tax) in our 2023 R1S (VIN #025xxx) without any trouble whatever. Not sure how Rivian can KNOW which storage units will work and which won't. There seem to be a lot of intangible variables involved.

Glad you found hardware that works for you, @MS Seal Beach!

I also installed the SanDisk from Costco and it worked perfect. I do know there are different speed versions out there. Costco's one is rated as follows:
  • Up to 1050MB/s Read Speed, 1000MB/s Write Speed

The one that I bought had a write speed of up to 150 MB/sec (the Rivian requirement was 20 MB/sec, I believe). Maybe the 1000 MB/sec should be the one to buy from SanDisc.

If your flash drive fails the Rivian speed test... maybe try the solution below that I posted about in Feb.

" I reinserted my SD card in it's holder a message came up saying something like "setting up drive" and then "testing speed" which promptly failed with a message of "device too slow".

I've been using this particular SD card for over a year now on my R1T and used the same card in my Model Y for a year without issue. Now it's suddenly "too slow" after an update ?

At any rate, I brought the card inside and loaded it in to my PC. Upon examination there was a text file named "benchmark.log" in the root directory of the SD card. When I opened it with Notepad there was just two words in the file "very slow". I then inserted a very fast/expensive USB-C flash drive in the Rivian and successfully set it up as my drive cam storage device. I then pulled that drive out and looked at it's "benchmark.log" file and it had one word in the file "READY".

So I then edited the file in the non-working SD card to say "READY" instead of "very slow", inserted it in my Rivian and it was once again working flawlessly like it had for the previous year.

So, if you had a drive that previously worked, but suddenly doesn't- pull it and take a look at the "benchmark.log" file in the root directory of the drive and if it says anything other then "READY" change it to that, reinsert it and see if it now works again."

Hello, I just found your post.
I tried your tip and it worked like a charm. I changed "very slow" to "ready".
Thanks for sharing the tip.

I wish it was that simple for my body in the morning. I guess coffee is the same, but it doesn't work as quickly. :)

This worked perfectly, thanks a lot !!
