Vehicle had been sitting overnight in 40°F weather, 30% Battery remaining. Driving in conserve for only 2nd time in almost 2 yrs. The front motors got above 285° turning the icon Red but there was no notification in driver display nor lost off power. Note that the temperature of the rear 2 motors also got very high...but was in conserve mode. Is this just a bug? Did a soft reset and fixed it for a day. Today it did it again. Any experience with this would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

That’s not overheating. If any of your motors were to overheat, there will be a warning message and light on the driver’s display.

Orange indication is within normal operating range, per Rivian.

Looks like your battery is preconditioning while you're navigating to a charger. Tell tale is your battery temp is going up in the two photos.

Gen 1 Quad runs the motors in an inefficient state to generate waste heat to condition the battery for optimal charging.

Dual and tri motor variants employ the same strategy, but the motors have a different cooling method, so you don't see the same high level internal temps to achieve it.

ugh - keep an eye on it - see my post

G1 motor fault and system fault -FIXED | Rivian Forum - R1T R1S R2 R3 News, Specs, Models, RIVN Stock -- Rivianforums.com

my motors started sky rocketing when trying to L3 charge - L2 was fine
did it 3 or 4 times and then the motor and system faults happened
might have been coincidence but nothing like that had ever happened before
That's just likely a coincidence in your situation. L2 typically doesn't push your vehicle to precondition/condition the battery because there is no real load on the battery to intake at most 11.5kW on a Level 2.

That's orange, not red. The Gen1 quads do this when preconditioning the battery for fast charging...totally normal. Your battery was at 65F and it wants to be mid-70s to low 80s for best charging performance.

Did you actually get a overheating error? Or are you just reacting to the orange color; not red. If you're convinced there is something wrong, long press your name on the center display when it happens, to insert an incident flag in datalogs, then contact Support.

EDIT to clarify and add picture

ugh - keep an eye on it - see my post

my motors started sky rocketing like 10 degrees a second only when trying to L3 charge - L2 was fine
stopped charge and disconnected so I wouldn't see red
did it 3 or 4 times and then the motor and system faults happened
might have been coincidence but nothing like that had ever happened before

Normal behavior despite your problem.

ah... I remember it well, the year was 2023 and casting video to our screens was just a twinkle in some software engineers eye when the new interface and motor temps became available. I can still hear the cries of "my motors are too hot!" and "my motors are too cold!" ...

The poor engineers at Rivian have to be kicking themselves daily for providing motor temp data to everyone on that screen (or at least providing color coding for temp ranges). It's a classic case of too much information

I wonder though, if the UI choice was yellow instead of orange, maybe fewer people would take it as imminent doom.

I thought the same thing about the color of the bar: leave it yellow until it is a problem and then make it red. Some people might notice that the bar changed color and, at a glance, think that orange is actually red. It seems like that UI choice is inviting misinterpretation.

Love the GIF of Scotty!

Were you preconditioning? The gen 1's run the motors in an inefficient manner on purpose to harvest the heat to warm the battery. This is expected behavior.

Was preconditioning, yes.
