I’m 65 years old we have 4 cars, 2 leafs , a sienna and highlander.
I spent a long time talking with my independent agent.
I thought part of it would be I have two 18 year olds, but both are in college, so no major cost increase.
He said it is predicated on price of vehicle, repair costs, and fact if damaged likely to be totaled.
I had planned to sell the highlander, so minor cost reduction there.
But overall, Northern California has some of the highest insurance rates.
I have bundled package.
I’m hoping nationwide would quote me but they said they needed a vin number first.

That’s an insane cost for insurance. I’m in the Bay Area as well and currently paying about $2400 annually. I worry my insurance company will significantly jack up the rate next year given these experiences that we’re hearing about. @Mikebike97 maybe the cost is also dependent on number of driving years experience. Is 97 when you were born, if you don’t mind me asking? If that’s the case then I’m hoping that explains the difference in cost since I’d have more than 20 years on you 👴
I’m 36 and State Farm in Tx quoted me about 1200 annually to insure. Not sure about age, I’ve also never had a wreck until this unfortunate accident in my riv.

That’s nuts. Your situation sounds pretty typical and I’d think would result in reasonable rates especially given the number of vehicles you have insured with them. Maybe I need to brace for a huge price increase when renewal rolls around. 😟

That’s a very reasonable rate, I’m guessing likely because you’re in TX. Northern CA rates are really high, but $5K for a single vehicle is astronomical.

I was looking for insurance for the R1T in advance of a potential purchase and my independent agent said due to 2 factors the cost is very expensive to insurance the Rivian. He checked with two insurance carriers in the Bay Area, both were over $5000 per year.
I have a clean record.
That's nuts. I'm in the Bay Area and my USAA is $693 per 6 months / <$1400 per year. $500 deductable and 300k/500k coverage. Of course I have a fair number of policies with them (over $3500 per year in auto insurance in total across 4x cars), a clean record, and my mileage is relatively low.

If it really is 40k they may total it. At 40k there could be additional damage once tore down, if they budget overage at 20% that puts the repair at 48k.

If they value the vehicle at 80k and salvage value is 50k then their net cost is 30k to them so they save 10-18k if they total it.

Will be curious to see how this comes out.

Totaled for sure at $56K estimate because there is usually additional "hidden damage" the the body shop will not eat so they will submit a supplemental claim for possibly $1,000s more. The insurance carriers are fully aware of that fact and will want to cut bait on something with $56K damage with possibly more hidden expenses to follow.

If this was truly a "minor accident with the front of my Rivian in a parking lot" what does that say for Rivian's ruggedness? This is becoming a real issue with even the most minor issues totaling out Rivian vehicles due to the super high cost of parts and labor. Of course Insurance companies don't work for charity, and we have already seen climbing rates for Rivian vehicles... is it going to get worse with all these totaled vehicles?

If it broke the tow hook it wasn't a minor accident. I think the OP mentioned in one of the comments they mistook the brake for the accelerator and launched into a tree. So a 7000lb vehicle being launched into a solid surface with no give at 900ftlbs of torque.

That doesn't sound like a minor oopsie backing into a pole or swiping a parked car or something to me. It sounds closer to a pretty optimal situation for frame damage. In fact I'd argue the only reason this collision looks so minor is the majority of the force was concentrated down the frame rail.

I was told the Rivian service team did a full estimate with the collision shop. Parts totaled 19k with labor accounting for the rest. Will keep you posted on what my insurance says.

Sounds good!

FYI.. the initial estimate from the certified adjuster working with the body shop when our i3 got rear ended last Dec was $6K. A week after the body shop cashed the $6K check from the insurance and actrually tore into the car... they brought in another adjuster to file a supplimental calim for another $11K in hidden damage. So the $6K repair ended up costing $17K... just saying!

Right, I read your previous post. They’ve already torn apart the car.

If they total it let us what insurance co gives you. Obviously depends on your odometer miles, but curious what used Rivians are really worth. Just out of curiosity I checked autotrader the other day in Central Illinois and can buy them new off dealer lots less than a new ordered one. Rivian obviously taking some unsold trucks to auction.

Update- after the collision center got a full estimate with rivian repair at $56k, SF insurance recently deemed a total loss. Took 2.5 weeks for them to review. Now I’m arguing the estimate ($78k) which they comped with a rivian r1s on a Rivian lot in CA, with no vin # listed.. All 2023 r1s in my area with similar mileage are reselling for at least $94k. Sad to see my riv go

Gotta love insurance companies:rolleyes:

I hope you successfully beat them at this game. That price is not representative.
