In some cases “frame damage” can be something that’s easily repaired, but for some reason the insurance company will not allow it & insist on replacement. These become salvaged title vehicles that are repaired & used without issues. I know someone that got a great deal on a nearly new Porsche like this.

I can’t imagine this is going to go well on vehicles with large “gigacast” parts.
I own one such R1S. However, the crumple zone on these vehicles (where the tow hook mounts) is a replaceable part, independent of the whole frame under the rig.
I may post photos of the design and fab of the front receiver we made for the r1s to haul a ‘rack n ride’ with EV dirtbike.

We are not gonna be able to get these things insured. Here in CA they are cracking hard and most carriers not writing new business. Im in a bad position where my Farmers agent didnt submit a bunch of verification pictures, etc for a current policy so they dropped me even though I followed thru in time, my agent screwed up. Im in underwriting now to try and get a new policy with a diff Farmers agent and hope to be approved or Im with no insurance.
I was looking for insurance for the R1T in advance of a potential purchase and my independent agent said due to 2 factors the cost is very expensive to insurance the Rivian. He checked with two insurance carriers in the Bay Area, both were over $5000 per year.
I have a clean record.

1. Most insurance companies will total an ev truck, so insurance costs are significantly higher. Further, recycling of the truck is very expensive, he said.
2. The insurance industry as a whole is seeing more accidents in vehicles using a touch screen for basic features compared to simple manual controls.
And the accidents he said are more serious.
Therefore, the actuaries doing analysis for the insurance industries, are ranking evs , such as Tesla’s and Rivian in at high risk categories.
Today, I saw two different teslas blow through a stop sign and a red light-by a school.
Time will tell if this technology really is more likely to cause more accidents.

And the accidents he said are more serious.
I went with the Rivian insurance (Nationwide) and it was less than $100 bucks a month. Only a few dollars more than for my old Chevy WT.

When they say "accidents are more serious" -- the vehicle is more damaged, but the people walk away with less injuries. So they're paying out a totaled vehicle but not months in the hospital. I haven't done any research, but anecdotally am fairly certain statistics will back up this statement.

That's insane, are you in the city and have no garaged parking or something? I'm in the east bay going through a purchase right now. State farm (I have home and other auto there) quoted 850 for my 6 month premium. Rivian insurance was 1100 per 6, but if I bundle both autos they're the same as state farm with both.

No, I live on the peninsula.
I thought it might be strange too.
I just tried liberty insurance and they wanted 3980, in addition to what I’m paying now.
250 deductible/250k
All liberty said was Rivian is expensive to insure, it is based on cost of the vehicle, they said. He gave an example of an R1S in a fender/ bender. Replacement cost for similar damage he said on a Tesla Y was about 5k. The Rivian cost was over 25k.
So if you can get the insurance for that price your doing great.

I quoted the Rivian out on both AAA and Geico and was also at ~$1500/yr with $1k collision deductible (and maxed out liability). $4-5k seems nuts…

PIP usually only pays about 10K in WA. Not sure about your state. Liability is what pays for bulk of injury claims and it does not cover the person who pays for it. Damage to other vehicles and their occupants hit by Rivian will be high, because of the weight.

This is $17K damage to our i3 that got rear-ended by a Smart Car last Dec...
The insurance actually paid for the repair vs totaling it because the original adjuster only estimated $6K in damage so Allstate paid it. A week after the body shop cashed the $6K check and they started working on it, they submitted another claim for $11K in hidden damage. Allstate was already in to it for $6K at that point so they really had no choice and had to go forward with the additional $11K. It's a 2017 vehicle and only worth $22k maybe... and they paid $17K to have it repaired. FWIW- they subrogated the full amount including my delectable to the at fault party's ins carrier (Geico). The repair took a little more than 6 weeks to complete.
Even with this pretty good hit... no frame damage to the tough little BMW!

Those little i3’s are tough as nails I tell ya. I am shocked they didn’t total it though. My fully loaded 2021 i3s was valued at $25K by Carmax recently. The depreciation is wild but I love this little car that could.

Damage to our vehicle..

Below is the guy that hit us... his car flipped over on it's side after he rear ended us. Some of the first responders got under his vehicle and flipped it back upright then they used their vehicle to push it off the roadway. We drove out i3 home with no warning lights!

^ So glad that not only did you walk away from this, but that you actually drove away.

That carbon fiber life module is no joke!

100% in agreement that this is the best car that BMW has ever built Munro thought the same which is why he raved about the i3 to anyone who would listen and gave away his full report on the car for practically nothing (I think he charged $10) because he wanted other OEMs to follow in BMWs footsteps.

That’s an insane cost for insurance. I’m in the Bay Area as well and currently paying about $2400 annually. I worry my insurance company will significantly jack up the rate next year given these experiences that we’re hearing about. @Mikebike97 maybe the cost is also dependent on number of driving years experience. Is 97 when you were born, if you don’t mind me asking? If that’s the case then I’m hoping that explains the difference in cost since I’d have more than 20 years on you 👴
