The city of Palo Alto just finished up their state of the city address, during which they announced the commissioning of one Rivian R1S police cruiser, as part of a new pilot project.

To the best of my knowledge, this is the first Rivian police vehicle in the United States.

This is cool, and I love Rivian. But I have to ask the logic behind the police investing in a Rivian vehicle.

The only thing I can come up with is long term cost advantage. Functionally the reality is high up front cost, slow charging and lower range.

Again,I think it’s neat and looking forward to seeing how this plays out for them.
A police patrol vehicle, such as this one, doesn't really accrue that many miles in a single shift. Based on my owner experience, and knowing typical charging times now, they'll be recharging between 50 & 100 miles, and that won't take long.

How much extra gasoline would a police cruiser use while idling? I hear that police never turn their police cars off during a shift, even when at lunch or dinner while parked.
Probably not as true now than it was in my day on the street. We did not yet have portable Police radios, and the car radio took a good 30 seconds to become operational from off. It was worth your life to turn the car off. We would not even shut the car off while being fueled at the city garage.

We had pool cars that were not shut off during shift change. There were patrol cars that may not have been turned off for weeks at a time. I remember some downtown cars that were three or four years old and had 10,000 miles on them and were beat to death.

The seating config is not great for a taxi, I'm sure it could be refined though to work

Still the same car. If it was cool before the paint job it’s still cool after.
It's not about the paint job, its about the use case. Dodge chargers lost their cool factor when they became cop cars, the crown vic before it. You see Mustang Mach-E taxis and cop cars in NYC, it is no longer an interesting car and i loved my Mach-E when i had it. This is my opinion.

From what I understand about ICE vehicles, exhaust emissions are highest.at low speeds and cooler engine temps which equates to city driving. And, as another member pointed out, MPG is poor. With EV’s, emissions are not relevant and efficiency usually best in city driving. IMO, this application suites EV’s perfectly. Maybe an effluent community like PA is trying to make a difference. Kudos for them. I hope their little experiment works out.

This is a very strange line of thought.

I think it is a very standard line of thought. I also think the same thing and many of my friends do as well.
