Pure conjecture, but I wonder if Rivian is involved in this more than just selling them a vehicle? Could it be a test case with plans to develop a police cruiser sales program?

That paint/wrap is ... horrific.

Palo alto police cars have same look except the star is too high for some reason? And Rivian has an office (and limited service center) in Palo Alto.

They sure seem more proud of being in Palo Alto than Irvine ?

lol i don't really think the "order" on which they list office locations with job availability is a measure of how "proud" they are. Could be any number of reasons for this order. like why is normal, il, their main manufacturing center 5th on the list? either way it doesn't matter...Rivian is headquartered in Irvine.

That being said, the Palo Alto police cruiser does look cool and hopefully Rivian can develop a fleet version for more departments to adopt.

In a City environment, driving 50 miles per shift would be surprising. A new Ford Police Interceptor (Explorer) weighted down with equipment only gets 14 - 15mpg real life. Under 300 miles per tank of gas.
This, and also that police vehicles even in the suburbs, often spend a lot of time parked, but needing to idle to keep the comms & computer energized, and the occupants comfortable. And speaking as a First Responder (FF/EMT/RN), I'd also welcome an EV ambulance with a large battery since that vehicle also does relatively few miles daily, and spends a lot other time at idle.

Being career Police, I think this is a great idea. A Rivian would be ideal for many metropolitan police situations. As a young radio patrol officer in Downtown Miami, I would rarely put more than 20 miles on the vehicle in an 8 hour shift. The quietness of an EV would make it an ideal vehicle for late night patrol. If Rivian were interested in pursuing this market, they could strip down the interior to bring down the price down to fleet levels. Also, a Rivian delivery van would make an excellent "paddy wagon".

The city of Palo Alto just finished up their state of the city address, during which they announced the commissioning of one Rivian R1S police cruiser, as part of a new pilot project.

To the best of my knowledge, this is the first Rivian police vehicle in the United States.

I have always heard that an average police car drives <120 miles per day, so an EV is perfect. And these cars have a ton of computers that need electricity, so also perfect.

Hope this doesn't catch on! Ford Explorers have been ruined because you never know if they are police or not from a distance - we don't need R1 to get ruined too!
The biggest and most easily spotted differentiator between the civilian and police interceptor models is the presence of roof rails! The govt/police model has no roof rails, so when you don't see them, you'll know to act accordingly ;)

You can't buy a civilan model without them.

Rivian has an office in Palo Alto where a lot of tech development and testing occurs. Their corporate office is in Irvine. When VW approached Rivian for a software joint venture, it was the Palo Alto location that developed the VW vehicles with the Rivian software/zone architecture for demonstration.

Latest video with RJ showing off hands free driving was in Palo Alto.
Yes, that video was filmed while the car was traveling northbound on the 280 between Palo Alto and San Mateo.

Happy to see the first Rivian police vehicle. Long term it should save that department money compared to a big ICE Car.

This is cool, and I love Rivian. But I have to ask the logic behind the police investing in a Rivian vehicle.

The only thing I can come up with is long term cost advantage. Functionally the reality is high up front cost, slow charging and lower range.

Again,I think it’s neat and looking forward to seeing how this plays out for them.
If it's good enough for Dubai, it's good enough for PA. Also, the 0-60 probably will help.
