Rivian R3 (s00n)
The city of Palo Alto just finished up their state of the city address, during which they announced the commissioning of one Rivian R1S police cruiser, as part of a new pilot project.

To the best of my knowledge, this is the first Rivian police vehicle in the United States.

This is cool, and I love Rivian. But I have to ask the logic behind the police investing in a Rivian vehicle.

The only thing I can come up with is long term cost advantage. Functionally the reality is high up front cost, slow charging and lower range.

Again,I think it’s neat and looking forward to seeing how this plays out for them.

I've always thought the R1 would make a great law enforcement vehicle. Although it is pricey for the role.

It would do particularly well for agencies that need a combination of on-road and off-road capabilities like the DEA.

Rivian's HQ is got a corporate office in Palo Alto, which in itself is a relatively small and extremely affluent jurisdiction. They're not doing hundred mile high speed chases, and I'm sure Rivian is making a bit of a sweetheart deal here to see their vehicles patrolling their local streets.

Um, I’m a fan of the concept but the paint job is lame. The single white door looks odd alone in all white.
That's a Chippy paint job.

In a City environment, driving 50 miles per shift would be surprising. A new Ford Police Interceptor (Explorer) weighted down with equipment only gets 14 - 15mpg real life. Under 300 miles per tank of gas.

That is a lower rating than I would have expected, but that same equipment is going to be in the R1S too. Of course if it’s really only driving 50 miles per shift, it is a moot point.

Are these vehicles shared over multiple shifts? I honestly don’t know.

In larger department, they are typically just part of the fleet. They would get checked out at each shift. When they are short on cars or if it is the nicest car, it could be checked and used 24 hours a day. Small department, they probably assign a car out to each Officer. A Rivian Police car would probably be given to community relations units or maybe even a high ranking supervisor. Although, it would be cool to have a car that is fast enough to hang with a Toyota Camry... or even a Hellcat from a dig.

Rivian is headquartered in Irvine, not Palo Alto.

But yes Palo Alto is small and affluent.
