Rivian's next-generation "RAN 1.5" charging dispensers are designed to be open to all EVs, featuring rapid battery replenishment using a 900-volt electrical architecture and native CCS connectors, with adapters available for vehicles with North American Charging Standard ports.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:
  • Open Network:
Rivian is opening its charging network, previously exclusive to Rivian vehicles, to all electric vehicles.

  • Next-Generation Chargers:
The "RAN 1.5" chargers are the next generation of Rivian's charging infrastructure.

  • 900-Volt Architecture:
These chargers utilize a 900-volt electrical architecture for faster charging speeds.

  • CCS Connectors:
They feature native Combined Charging System (CCS) connectors, the standard for many EVs.

  • Adapters for NACS:
Drivers of EVs with factory-equipped North American Charging Standard (NACS) ports can plug in using a Rivian-approved adapter.

  • Increased Availability:
Rivian has been expanding the RAN 1.5 network, with new stations going online in various locations.

  • Examples of New Stations:
Some of the new RAN 1.5 stations are in California, Texas, and Illinois.

  • Design and Functionality:
The design of the RAN 1.5 chargers is focused on ease of use and accessibility for all EV drivers.

  • Charging Speed:
The 900-volt architecture and CCS connectors enable rapid battery replenishment.

The Henderson RAN is a good spot on I85 between Richmond/Petersburg, VA and Raleigh, NC. Starbucks, Dennys, etc. Trailer pull-through and level 2 chargers as well. There is an EA across the street that I used before the RAN was open, it is cramped and crowded.

Update: all RAN stations on the East Coast in between Georgia and central Virginia are now open to all EVs, as well as the OG Rivian Experience Center in Groveland, California.

Big shoutout to Chad at RivianRoamer for getting the latest data, and also in case this is wrong, I need someone to blame it on.

I’ll be visiting the one in Charlotte next week as we head home from Seneca, SC (via Blacksburg to visit our daughter), and then the one in Waynesboro, VA.

Hope they’re not too busy.

I would expect all of them to be done before the R2 will be released so they can use the stations.

Probably not going to see NACS on a RAN charger until at least they start offering them on their vehicles
Depends, they may also want to get many/most/all NACS capable before they roll out NACS-only vehicles. They may want to avoid news stories about their new $40k car that can’t make it home because it can’t use their own charge network (and sure it “should” be able to get home using only Tesla’s Superchargers, I’m willing to bet at least one person lives somewhere that doesn’t have a v3-only supercharger route from a Rivian Service center to home...and more if you end up with a route to a RAN you can’t use first, and start the planning over from there!).

Alternately maybe the initial few months of NACS-only Rivians will include the adaptors from CCS1, and they won’t run out, and nobody will lose them on the trip home.

(yeah, there are other ways of making it work, but I’m in general a fan of avoiding bad press about unfortunate customer experiences by reducing unfortunate customer experiences!)

Well they are still installing RAN chargers with CCS plugs and we are probably about a year or so before the first R2 start shipping. So I doubt they will replace the CCS plugs with NACS before the R2 starts shipping. Probably will be adapters.

I doubt they would do NACS only chargers at RAN before the R2 ships, but I could see them doing chargers with 2 tails or otherwise allowing one to choose between NACS and CCS from a single charger. I was just at an EVGo or maybe BLINK charger yesterday that had a choice between CCS and ChaDeMo.

Probably will be adapters.
well that is the _boring_ way, but given how far into 2025 we are, and that “in theory” they are “still on track” for 2025 R2 production my theory that we will see NACS at RAN prior to the R2 could well be just wishful thinking. Much like my theory that RAN prices will go back down at some point...

I've been to both of those, they won't be busy. Good quality chargers.

I also doubt that they will include both CCS and NACS plugs. RAN chargers aren't setup to have two coords like EA or EVGo.

Nav took us to Blacksburg via Asheville, so we skipped the one in Charlotte. Hit the one just outside of Greenville, and will be stopping in Waynesboro this afternoon.
