I recently did a roadtrip (Davis, CA => Yosemite => Los Angeles, CA => Davis, CA) in my Gen1 R1S. (Around 1,200 total miles over 6 days).

I signed up for the Tesla Charging Membership ($12.99 per month; signed up using the Tesla app) just before the trip and cancelled it again after the trip, since I knew I'd need to use the Superchargers just for this trip.

The Tesla membership discounts the cost per kWh when using the Tesla Supercharger as a non-Tesla vehicle.
For example, in CA, the non-membership price is $0.60/kWh, while with membership is $0.47/kWh depending on the location.

To make the membership cost worth it, I needed to charge for more than 100 kWh at the Tesla Superchargers. And I easily exceed that on this trip, even though I used the RAN chargers when available.

If you want to use your membership pricing, you MUST start your charging session via the Tesla app BEFORE you plug in. If you don't, you get charged the non-membership price.

Not all Telsa Superchargers are compatible with non-Tesla vehicles. So use the Rivian app (or in-vehicle navigation) to find a compatible Tesla Superchargers.

If you follow the above, and have an approved NACS DC adapter, it all works perfectly.

Note, if you don't have a Tesla membership, you can just plug in to a Tesla Supercharger without using any app. The billing happens automatically via your Rivian account.

Did the same thing on my last trip, will buy another month when we roadtrip to Tampa from ATL next month. As you indicated it's about a batteries worth of charge to break even (2 charges 20-70%), so 400+ miles roundtrip is my benchmark to buy a month of membership.

Have driven Colorado to Missouri at least 10 times in my Tesla, all bag I-70. Going soon in my new R1S. In the app and vehicle, not one of the many Tesla superchargers are showing as an option. Yes, believe they are selected in the filters

If you bring up the map in ABRP configure for the Rivian and scroll across I70 you will see some Tesla stations on I70 that are open to NACS.

Then you're doing it wrong. The Rivian app and in-vehicle navigation will show you all the Tesla chargers that are open to Rivians - the exact same information that you will see on the Tesla app and website if you filter correctly.

Only about 1/2 of the Tesla chargers along I-70 through Kansas are open. If you're using your Tesla experience as a guide, then don't - that could get you into trouble if you just assume that you can use the same superchargers in your Rivian. There are many places in the country where there are many Telsa-only superchargers but have few or none open to Rivian drivers.

a) In the Rivian App, tap the 'Arrow'/'Map' symbol in the bottom bar.
b) Move the map a little, then the 'Search' and 'Filter' buttons show at the top of the screen. Tap the 'Filter' button
c) Select the following Filters:
- Speed: 150+ kW
- Network: Rivian, Tesla
- Hide: Out of order, Incompatible, Low score

You should see Rivian and compatible Tesla superchargers.

Thank you, very helpful. Will this do the same in the car's Nav ? I had all types of chargers selected and it wants to navigate to those "others", no Tesla. But in the app you suggested, seems lots of the Tesla chargers are available.

The in-vehicle Navigation has the same filtering and information, just a slightly different way to get there:-

a) On the center Rivian screen, tap the 'Arrow'/'Map' icon in the launch bar at the bottom of the screen
b) Tap the 'lightning-bolt' icon on the right side of the screen
c) The filters are now at the top of the screen, under 3 separate buttons: Speed, Network, and Hide.
- Under 'Speed', select: 150+ kW
- Under 'Network', select: Rivian, Tesla
- Under 'Hide', select: Incompatible, Out of order, Low score

Nice!!
Good luck on your trip/adventure!

One last thing: if you use the in-vehicle navigation to set your destination, you can adjust which chargers/charging stops the routing algorithm automatically adds.

Once you've set your destination, tap the 'arrow' to expand the route, then tap the 'gear' icon there. You can now also set which networks/chargers will be automatically added as charging stops for your trip.

I would also recommend cross/checking the Tesla charger availability in the Tesla App just to be certain. If only 4 of 8 chargers (50% or fewer) charger spots are available, chances are that you will need to wait for someone to leave. This is because people typically position their Teslas every other charging space and you will need two adjacent spaces to charge your R1. There might sometimes be the odd instance where the charging slot on the end is open, then you only need to take up one charging space as long as there isn’t a curb preventing you from taking up the adjacent non-EV parking space.

The first time I used my adapter it didn't work. A vehicle reboot solved that issue. I spent 15 min with Rivian support to figure that out. Hopefully it works well for you.
