(I know there are a couple of posts about this mount and charger, but I am making this a new post to highlight the mods I made as well as to address the "ring light" question that a couple people have raised.)

I installed the @EV Sportline Dashboard Phone Mount with MagSafe Charger and it works really well. The price feels expensive for a phone mount, but with the plug-and-play charger, and the quality of the materials, the value proposition is there (so long as it’s on sale for $79 and not the regular $99).

As a charger and mount, it is rock solid. No worries at all about the phone being secure enough and the mount being stable. Super easy to use and I highly recommend it as a mount and MagSafe charger.

The installation video on the product website is essential for installation and it’s done really well. It took me just a few mins longer than the length of the video to install it in my R1T.

Here’s a link to the dash phone mount in question:

https://evsportline.com/collections.../rivian-r1t-r1s-dashboard-magsafe-phone-mount

https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/...nd-play-hidden-power-wire-ev-sportline.25299/

I made two modifications to the mount:

1) I added a 90° USB-C male to USB-C female 100W right-angle adapter to the wire that comes out from the dash. I think the phone mount kit should ship with a right-angle adapter, but since it doesn’t, this is a good mod. This is the adapter I used:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B77CJD7T?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1.

2) I also found that where the mount naturally sits on the left side of the dash (to the left of the steering wheel) is too low for me, so I added an aluminum 17mm ball-mount extension adapter, which has been great (be sure to order 17mm and not 1” if you go that route). You can see in my pictures that the phone sits higher than without the extension. It works well for me. Here's the ball-mount extension I used:

https://www.amazon.com/Aluminum-Ext...se&keywords=Leenconghui&qid=1724217730&sr=8-9

I have seen some people post here wondering about the colorful lights on the charger mount itself and wondering if they are distracting, etc. They do light up, but it’s a constant light and it’s not distracting to me. In fact, when my phone isn't mounted, I don’t really think about the light ring at all (and it helps that the phone is almost always on the mount when I am in the truck). However, it might bother you, so take my impressions for what they're worth (they're free, after all).

Tbh, outside of being an Uber driver, I never really understood why people get phone mounting docks in modern vehicles. Especially ones that either already have CarPlay or good mapping software integrated — like Rivian and Tesla. Why do you still need your phone mounted up high?

According to this diagram, looks like some of the rear USB C power ports and the wireless charger.

Thanks, this is helpful. I wonder if using those other USB ports at the same time may cause problems or blow the fuse?

Here is another variation on the dashboard mounted wireless charging solution. A bit complicated, but the EVSportline was backordered at the time and I needed dashboard mounted wireless charger sooner. The extension arm adapter is for extra height, so that the phone can be seen slightly above the steering wheel. The wires could have been positioned more neatly, but the color match the dash so well they blend in the background when viewed in person.

A few times I've found it useful--mostly when driving cross country.

I have a number of aviation apps that overlay NEXRAD radar images on a map, and I use this when driving through areas of sporty weather.

Sometimes the onboard Rivian nav app is just goofy, and I'll use the phone as backup rather than trying to fix the Rivian nav in traffic. This is trending better, but still occurs as of two weeks ago..

I'm frequently on call, and iOS defaults to suppressing audible text and app notifications while connected to a vehicle bluetooth. The phone still shows text notifications (and my call app) on the screen) so I don't miss calls.

I guess we are not driving the same truck. Navigation is absolutely useless vs Waze both for traffic and closures etc - and in my part of Canada, barely shows any of the chargers. What about SMS and Imessage?

I just wish the light wasn’t so bright. I’ve been meaning to bring it to a tint shop to have the light ring blacked out (or maybe a tint film applied) and to get the phone puck wrapped in matte black (the shiny surface bugs me, and got pretty scratched up in a few days. Also, the ball is plastic, and so is the screw that treads into it. It will snap if you try to really torque it down (ask me how I know 😂). Locktight doesnt really work, but teflon tape will help it stay secure (in stock form, it wants to spin no matter how much you tighten it—even to the point of snapping the “stud”). I do feel that for the price, they should have used a metal ball and stud🤷🏻‍♂️

Other than couple things, the kit is pretty good. It’s a tad bit bouncy (more like jittery, I guess), but I’m not sure any phone mount can truly avoid that. I do think that if they angled the bracket up 90°, flush with the dashboard instead of down, that they could have made a more stable design. I may ask if I can buy an extra bracket piece to play with that (or make my own). Also, my first 12v DC fuse to USB-C adapter failed on me, but EVSportline promptly sent me another one. It’s a bit of a pain to install, so I’m hoping the replacement lasts.

I found routing and properly securing/stowing the adapter and extra cable (I used a 90° adapter as well) by popping off the side panel on the left side of the dash. I wouldn’t try this without a trim removal tool:

Waze in our area is probably the most used and most up to minute traffic app available. I've avoided full road closures by seconds, with Waze telling me to reroute off the freeway. Not saying Rivian Nav is bad, but it is not as proative as Waze.

Also, text notifications that pop up on screen while driving. I can glance at the title or sender of the text or email as it flashes on the screen and decide whether I have to pull off and return the text or just keep driving until later.

I should also add: this is the strongest magnet I’ve used of any MagSafe mounting puck, and feels very high quality. I just wish you could turn the light off. Who needs/wants charging specs and “MADE IN CHINA” all lit up??

Heard of Waze for live traffic? Heard of XM Radio, for content Rivian doesn’t yet offer (i.e. sporting events)? Heard of OnX for off-pavement navigation, for overland adventuring and being “adventurous forever”? There are uses, even if they are not for you.

I just wish the light wasn’t so bright.
Get someone with a 3D printer to print you a ring to friction fit or superglue over the light ring, either in opaque or translucent material. Opaque would make it a ambient light source (like interior accent lights). Translucent would dull it down.

Yes! This, the permanently fixed 17mm ball, a charger capable of 15W paired with a power supply that can't deliver that much power... all puzzling product development decisions. Gives me pause about rest of the business.
