EV Roadmap Refuel Trip Estimator (Google Sheets)

Hey Everyone,

Not sure if this already exists somewhere, but I wanted a simple EV Roadmap Refuel Trip Estimator so I could calculate how many stops I would have to make on a trip. So, I created a Google sheet to run the calculation.

Basically, you enter the following:

• Capacity (maximum estimated milage for your vehicle)
• Refill max (maximum percentage you want to refuel default: 80%)
• Min (minimum percentage you want to refuel default: 20%)
• Trip (trip distance)
• L1 (percentage of refuels using a level 1 charger. Not recommended)
• L2 (percentage of refuels using a level 2 charger. Not recommended)
• L3 (percentage of refuels using a level 3 charger. Not recommended)

Then it will calculate:

• Balance (remaining miles available when you arrive)
• Stops (number of stops you will make)
• Wait time (time you will wait assuming the charger is available)

Caveats
I need it so I created it. It's read-only, so feel free to edit to your heart's desire.

You can also plan a real world trip in the app and vehicle nav that shows actual real world charging station locations and the nav will take you to those locations. Starting soc and min arrival soc all adjustable to user preferences. I guess I’m misunderstanding the premise of your calculator

Not sure if anyone is checking, but I actually like the spreadsheet because it helps calculate much quicker than going into the app. It's like a back-of-the-napkin type thing. I'm able to adjust to the weather or any other variables for estimates.

An EV Roadmap Refuel Trip Estimator would definitely make long drives a lot easier to plan. I’ve tried building similar tools myself and found that Google Sheets works great for these types of calculations. If you ever want to expand it with more advanced features, like pulling data from maps or calculating different routes, I’d recommend checking out myexcelonline academy. They have awesome tutorials on building interactive tools in Excel and Google Sheets that could really help you take it to the next level.

Unless I am missing something, the only issue I see with the spreadsheet is it is not aware of where the DCFC chargers are.

Take stop 1 at 320 miles, it is a problem if the chargers are 280 miles and 370 miles on that stretch. This is where using the vehicle or an App like ABRP makes planning easier.

It is a lot easier to plan stops like this in an ICE as gas stations are everywhere, chargers are just not that readily available yet.

If you want to plan the stops yourself, use PlugShare instead of ABRP. It just shows you a circle of "range from this stop" and you pick a next stop yourself, then it routes, and you pick the next one.

This is an interesting exercise in spreadsheeting and planning, and I've absolutely done similar myself - but as a "tool for most people", ABRP/Plugshare makes a lot more sense.

What I've found is that real world estimates are easier to guide my stops while planning.
