The R2 will be my first EV. I'm looking for ideas and thoughts on which config to choose.

I am replacing a 5th gen 4Runner. It's a slow horse, but a great vehicle otherwise. Not very efficient, but roomy and has never let me down.
I still do projects around the house, so the R2 will see bags of mulch, plants, and lumber from time to time. (The roll down rear window is a must)
My second vehicle is a fun car - fast convertible.
My wife's car is an Acura SUV.
We do occasionally take road trips.
Both retired.

The R2 appears to be the EV version of the 4Runner, but a bit smaller - and MUCH faster. I think it will be perfect for me. As for config, I have never been a base model sort of guy, so I am leaning toward the Dual motor and large battery. The tri-motor sounds like killer fun, but I am looking for the sweetspot.

Apologies if this has already been beaten to death, but I searched and did not see a discussion on it specific to the R2.

Welcome! Lots of excitement around here for the R2 as well. Unless I missed something we don't know the possible configurations yet. The website shares some features, but we don't yet know which features belong to what packages, etc.

At the moment pricing is supposed to be between $45k - ~$65k. So you should be able to get some decent upgrades for your $. They were showing it off around the country between August - March, but I don't think they have released new dates for that yet. I saw it in Denver last year and it's a nice size that I think would work well for you based on what you say you want.

I would expect the DM to be priced in the low 50s. It wouldn't surprise me if they only offer 1 battery pack for the dual motor version but I also wouldn't be surprised if it's software locked with the potential to upgrade. A DM will probably get you 300-325 miles of range and a 0-60 time around 3.5 seconds.

The dimensions of the R2 are going to be smaller than a G5 4Runner, but I think due to shape and being an EV it will punch above it's dimensions in cargo capacity due to the frunk and lack of gas tank. The R2 (unlike R1) will use the battery pack as a structural floor, which means the rear cargo area should be much taller than a similar sized vehicle. Rivian has also shown a knack for finding creative ways to take advantage of space with storage.

Bill-I would test drive the R1S a couple of times to get a sense of a Rivian. It isnt apples to apples but it will give you a point of reference. Not sure where you are but some of the locations host R2s that you could see first hand. Lastly, if you can put up with us, spend time here and you will get a lot of information. Look forward to you participating in the community. Cheers.

Thanks! Yes, I’ve done a test drive of an R1S. Different feel, but I got used to it quickly. I look forward to learning more here! I’m in the Dallas area, and there is a Rivian space. They expect to have an R2 there in August. I‘ll definitely visit when they do.

Personal opinion here (i.e. no facts to back it up)...

I believe that the first versions of the R2 to be available sometime in 2026 will be their top-of-the-line tri-motor because they'll be able to charge more for it and it will have the highest margin for them. Just like the first R1's released were all the Quads...

Price is anyone's guess - but understand that the $45K will be for the single-motor variant with the smallest battery and that it will probably be the last model available for sale. I'm hoping that the tri-motor isn't much over $65K. My ideal R2 is probably the dual-motor with the biggest battery pack, but I'm not sure I'll be able to wait if the tri is available first.

It’s hard to say without any configs available yet what the sweet spot is. I’d imagine the fully maxed out R2 will be around the price of the base R1S. I’d get the maxed out one but that’s what I did for my R1, except I chose tri over future quad because of range concerns with the quad.

This is my road trip car and a tri motor allows for one motor conserve mode to max out range.

Interesting. So you are saying the tri config could have the longest range? Can you expand on that a little?

Tri would have better range than Quad with the same battery pack. Dual would have the best range of any of them with the same battery pack.
At this point, we dont know anything about the specs, so they COULD come and say only quad R2 will have a max pack, and everything else gets a standard pack. Which would put the quad as the highest range. (Highly doubt they will do that)

Ah, ok. Thanks. I'm still thinking Dual and the largest battery pack available is the way to go for me.

I was referring to the R1 series with a quad. In conserve it’s running two motors where the tri runs one in conserve. This makes the tri’s efficiency in conserve close to the dual.

Rivian did mention two battery sizes to give approximately 270 and 330 miles. There will be RWD, Dual drive (I assume performance option too) and tri.
I am wondering if Explore trim for RWD with limited options as this is the loss leader, dual drive with both battery sizes (largest needed for performance mode) and Adventure spec and then tri models only being Ascend and no options other than colors and paints. Question is if the trims will be tied to the motors or more variety.

To be lean they should reduce options and multiple variations but for the lower volume R1 they have not done this.

I'm really interested in the configs as well. Coming from a Tesla, I'm unused to picking a battery size. In general, I don't want to be humping around a big heavy battery when most of my driving is local, but I do road-trip pretty frequently. I've always said that charger availability, charging speed (max rate, curve) and efficiency are more important than range, so I'll be very interested in those characteristics as well. I've read that the max charge rate for the R1S is 220kW, which is lower than my Tesla at 250kW. But the curve is really king.
