I purchased a R1T used (12xxx VIN) a couple weeks ago. My family and I set off for weekend camping trip to Joshua Tree and wanted to check out the new Outpost/RAN chargers set up there last month. I have no problems charging at home on level 2.

Pulled up to the RAN and plugged in to a charging station at around 48% SOC only to get an error code and red light asking me unplug and tried again.

No biggie, I tried it again and it didn't work. Went to another stall and it also didn't work. Tried multiple stalls and each time it would say "Connecting..." and then give me an error code.

Other Rivians were able to pull in and charge almost immediately and I started to panic that it was an issue with my truck. Called the roadside assistance hotline and tried various combinations of soft reboot, hard reboot, and sleep cycle without success. I even tried removing and adding my payment method to my primary account holder. The app would not allow me to trigger manually charging at the station nor tap to pay at the station - likely because charging at this location was free. I gave up after an hour and a half of working with roadside assistance.

Fortunately I purchased the CCS to NACS adapter from the gear shop and received it before our trip. I drove to the Tesla Supercharger about 10 miles backwards to Yucca Valley. I plugged in one of the Supercharger stations with the adapter and was able to DCFC to 100+ kWh pretty easily. I even tested it at a local EVGo using CCS and it worked as well. So clearly, my truck can DC fast charge just embarrassingly not at a RAN.

I tried it again at the same RAN the next day without any success either. Called the charging hotline and they were able to see my vehicle attempts at multiple stations (including non-Rivians since this location is open to all EVs), but for some reason it wasn't able to authorize the transaction even after the tech manually reset the station.

Has anyone else had this issue and able to resolve without a service center visit? We are two months out on our appointment, but need access to various RANs for a couple upcoming ski trips.

Seems like an account issue? You didn't say anything about getting the vehicle's ownership account changed to you - has that been done? If not, or if it was not done correctly/completely by RIvian, that could be the problem...?

Check your card # and expiration date in your account. Almost certainly this is because your Rivian account is still not configured properly yet after the change in ownership.

Yep, I had the ownership transferred to me and my Rivian account on day 2 of ownership. I reached out to Rivian support and they handled the transfer within 24 hours.

I thought this was a possibility, but I changed out to a different credit card and also logged out/in as advised by the roadside assistance tech.

I had a similar problem a few months ago. In my case, I couldn't get a charge on RAN stations, but there wasn't any clear error message. My R1T connected but stopped the session before delivering any power.

Getting it running again was a two step process. First delete your payment method and add a new valid card. Second, if you have had a bad payment method, there will be a balance due on your account. I think this is meant to be a courtesy, they let you charge a certain amount and then freeze your account. Your balance doesn't automatically get paid when you configure a new card. It wasn't until my third agent interaction that I found someone who knew about this. They manually initiated payment of the outstanding balance by the new card, and then it started working.

Can't say for sure that this is your problem, but it is worth a try.

I wouldn't be surprised to hear they have a setting/bug in their payment software that temporarily disables charging for a particular VIN that fails charging attempts too many times in quick succession. Combining that with the vehicle needing to be reset after three failed attempts to charge could be a big issue.

Good advice - I reached out to Rivian support and asked them if I had an outstanding balance on my account that I could pay, but they unfortunately confirmed there wasn't one.

My R1T was unable to connect at all - it would show "Connecting..." and then lead to failure. The agent for the charging station said she could see my vehicle was attempting to connect, but that the transaction wouldn't authorize which prevented charging.

Just curious if you have updated the firmware on your R1T. If previous owner didn't and it's sitting on some old firmware that may have a bug with authentication/authorization...

Good thinking. My vehicle was on the latest software at the time (and still the same one).

That's good! Couple of thoughts while you are troubleshooting:

1. When using NACS adapter, did you use (A) Tesla app to select the charger# and paid through Tesla app, or just plugged in the NACS and let (B) Rivian do the payment with Tesla? If there is issue with payment/clearing with RAN, it is likely Tesla supercharger would have had same/similar issue if trying to clear through Rivian! Either way, will be good to know. Outside of Tesla SC, other EVGo etc clear payment with you directly using their own app, and not via Rivian, so you don't see an issue there.

2. Suggest try to troubleshoot while you are not on a road trip. You should visit a RAN just for troubleshooting and see if it is a specific RAN site issue, or all RAN sites.

cheers

Both methods worked. I charged directly and had Rivian handle payment with Tesla, and saw Rivian charged my credit card successfully. I also signed up for a Tesla charging membership and initiated charging and payment through the Tesla app.

I will definitely try another RAN if I can swing by one either on our next trip or in passing!

A Google search for this very issue I am having brought me to this thread...I bought my '22 R1T about a month ago and on the 600 mile drive home from where I purchased it I was unable to charge on any RAN chargers...I'd have the same exact issue that the OP had...a long period of "connecting" then would get a message to "try again", which I did several times at different chargers and it still never worked.

Ownership of the vehicle had been transferred into my name and I had a valid card that I use more or less daily attached to the account. I called roadside assistance and they walked me through a vehicle reset but nothing worked. Luckily I had purchased a NACS adapter which did allow me to use Tesla Superchargers but only if I started the session from the Tesla app rather than just plugging it into the car...if I did it that way, I'd get an error message as well.

Fast forward to today and I found myself at the mall near my house which has 6 RAN chargers so I decided to see if it was still and issue and plugged in and the same thing happened.

So this all leads me to believe that it must be an issue with the card I have attached to my account since I can charge from a supercharger but only if I start the session from the Tesla app, which ironically uses the same credit card for billing, but not if I just plug straight in which would charge me via my Rivian account.
