Good Morning All,
I have had mostly wonderful experiences with my truck. This included a road trip last week that took me from Central Virginia up to Pittsburg NH to play in the snow and the cold. Truck performed well and I have no complaints about that.
On the way back, about 2 hours from home, stopped for a break and a charge. Charged at the Rivian Charger near Front Royal VA. Charged just fine with no issues and then started back on my way. About 4-5 miles form the charger I get the "Electrical Hazard" warning and pull off to the side of the road. Did a hard reset and that went away, started driving again and everything functioned normally and no further hazard lights came on. Called Service and had them log the issue.
(Side note, I know the warning says to drive to a service center immediately - for where I was at, my home was 2 hours away and the service center is another hour past that. So driving to home was always going to be a part of getting to a service center. Two other factors in my decision making: I was on the tail end of an 8 hour day of driving and tired and the timing was such I could not have made it to a service center before it was closed.)
So drove on without issue and then stopped at a Tesla SC close to home just to give the battery a little extra juice owing to the approaching winter storm and wanting to be sure I had enough range for whatever might transpire. Plugged in with the NACS adapter from Rivian and within 10 seconds got a red light. Tried another charger, same thing.Got in and checked the drivers dash screen for warning lights and what not and saw nothing. Then opened to warnings menu and found that DC Charging was unavailable. (Side Note 2: with the warning only appearing under the "alarm bell" menu it is easy to miss as that always has something on it from Gear Guard and so it doesn't stand out. There should be a Dash Warning, Wassym)
I had enough range to make it home and so drove home, unpacked and plugged it into my Level 2 charger and yes, it was charging just fine at the usual 11kW I get from my ChargePoint charger. Created a detailed service request in the Rivian App and then followed up with a call to to service. On both the App and the Call I am getting told the first appointment is April 11th. (95 or so days away, but who's counting? lol)
During the course of all of this I also hunted on the forums for this issue and have tried the Hard reset and letting the truck go to sleep to see if that resolved the charging issue. After doing those items, you get in the truck while in park and there is no warning. UNTIL you put your foot on the brake and shift it into gear, then it comes back.
So just reaching out to see what others have experienced and what I may have missed. In my searching on the forum I see three possibilities - least likely is an HV Battery issue (I say least likely because all of those seem to go into turtle mode) and then two that are more likely: 1. a potential harness issue that has seemed to pop up with some of the Gen 1's and 2. The HVAC plug on the original builds that allows water to get into places it shouldn't thereby causing a voltage issue that triggers the electrical warning. I lean towards this one just thinking of how much the heat was used in the snowy/icy 9 degree weather in NH and how that last fateful occurred was the first charge where in we were in temps that were above freezing and the ice that was everywhere on the truck was starting to melt.
So, if you've made it this far in this post, thanks for hanging in for so many words!! please know I love this truck and have had so much fun in it and so even though I want the simplest solution possible for this issue, it is because I want to get back out in the wild in it and in no way has made me want to trade in the EV.
Here is the post concerning the HVAC/Water issue I referenced:
