So I just watched the new Munro video hoping to get some new information about what is in the Gen2 vehicles. Only thing new I saw was that the infotainment system is using a Ambarella CV5 chip for something. Maybe for gear guard? The camera feeds that show up on the screen? Maybe the video that gets transcoded and sent back to Rivian? Who knows! But I see no evidence of there being MobileEye in Gen2 vehicles. I am curious what your source for that is...

This is the URL to the video FYI:

Always seemed to me that Elon's idea that if human vision is adequate for human drivers, FSD shouldn't need other sensor systems, was pretty faulty logic. But I'm no engineer, just a regular human reasoning with human brain parts.
Humans actually use more than just their sense of sight to drive effectively. Hearing, touch sensitivity, and even smell are all processed in the Observe Orient Decide Act (OODA) loop.

Humans cannot see in the dark, nor through fog, or heavy weather. Makes sense to utilize multiple sensors if for no other reason, redundancy.

Very interesting read. Excellent information, even if some is speculative.

While I am just as prone as others to geek out on what is possible, I think that we may be missing a key point....

Rivian has moved on from gen 1 and is largely disincentivized from enhancing self-driving features on that platform.

For any given decision, they will favor gen 2 (or gen 3) over expending effort to backward generations. Those products are sold. There is no monetary incentive to enhance features. On the contrary, there is profit incentive to drive buyers toward buying the newest models. That is just the way of the world.

I greatly appreciate that Rivian. Tesla, and others do provide enhancements to older generations. That is one of the wonders of software-based vehicles and it is part of the value proposition. We all drive something that is even better than the day we bought it. Truly amazing!

As explained by the OP, my gen 1 R1T is hardware limited. I should not expect current self-driving capabilities to significantly improve.

It seems that gen 1 owners are at the mercy of Mobileye for self-driving enhancements. Mobileye is also likely focused on improving their newer products. Nonetheless, nothing can really be done to enhance gen1 without upgrading the self driving compute module (and probably sensors). Even vision-only self-driving licensed from another vendor would require enhanced compute.

I'm not thrilled about that, but facts are facts.

This is not a Rivian-specific problem. It is universal to other vehicles and any computing platform. It is an inherent feature that older hardware is always a restriction to software enhancement. (Conversely, old software on newer computer hardware can also be limited.)

If I want enhanced self-driving, Comma.ai offers a DIY path to ADAS. (My limited and potentially incorrect understanding is that it does not leverage any Rivian cameras or sensors, instead relying on its own forward -facing camera and compute module... so no 360 collision avoidance.) A good possibility for those who want more. If that's not enough, looks like you are in the market for a newer vehicle.

Personally, I'm enjoying the heck out of driving my Rivian with my limited human senses and wits. I feel privileged, not deprived.

But, but, but, Elon said you only need two cameras!!!

Class Action Lawsuit IMO. Rivian sold and marketed the Gen1's as having 100% full backwards compatibility with FSD and are changing course. I know I'll be in on one if it comes to fruition.

** Edit since some people can't believe their beloved RJ would ever do something like that, here's a direct screenshot from Rivian.com in 2021, 2020 is even more brazen in the claims.

It's hilarious.

There has been growing discussions over whether autonomous driving updates will only be limited exclusively to Gen2 Rivian vehicles. I also believe that if Rivian fails to deliver the promised hands-free driving features in Gen1 Driver+, it could lead to a Class Action Lawsuit for false advertising.

I'd be interested in hearing what others think about this.

Gen 1 development is over. It’s never coming. Dead platform. I hope you at least got preorder pricing. Good luck on the class action, you’ll need it. I certainly expected them to provide hands free like they advertised but it’s not going to happen. If you want hands free, buy a Comma 3X for your Rivian and enjoy a great level 2 Adas today.
