So Rivian doesn't recommend rotating the spare? Stupid. I'll always do five-tire rotations.

I don't know why Rivian chose the rearward-cross rotation pattern rather than a frontward-cross pattern. Many tire shops prefer frontward-cross. That seems to be a matter of taste, not necessarily science or engineering.

Costco's default, to simplify decision-making in their shops, is a frontward-cross rotation pattern. They will do a different rotation pattern on request, but you have to request it every time.

***

Complicating the issue, some replacement tires are directional -- requiring dismounting and remounting of two tires each time in any four-wheel rotation pattern.

Our Costco was initially reluctant to do either frontward- or rearward-cross, advising me that they thought a simple front-to-back rotation (with no dismount/remount charges) would be more cost-effective for us.

I opted to stay with the rearward-cross pattern, but I still don't know if that was the right choice or not.

I love seeing others' insights on this forum! Thanks to all!

What one SC does is unrelated to what Rivian as an entity recommends. You can see above what they seem to officially recommend.

Here is the R1T owners guide

Not true. Lake Forest SC rotated mine in January without objection.

I would bring up the fact Rivian recommends that the tire tread depth difference between left and right tires on each axle not exceed 2/32 to Rivian SC, Discount Tire or any tire shop.

Tell them you would like to rotate the spare as well to ensure they are all wearing evenly and within Rivian recommendations. That way when you use the spare, you will be following Rivians recommendations.

R1T in 2023 ?
Are you talking about cross-rotation? My local discount tire had no issues doing the cross rotation recommended for quad motors. I would call a different location if you have one available or talk to the manager and show them the owners guide / manual.

If Rivian does not want to cross-rotate, I would bring this concern up to Rivian support and show them the manual where it recommends cross-rotation.
Yes. I wanted to report to Rivian then but forgot. I will though. Also will try anothey DT location next time.

And you are taking what is shared too literally, at face value. Even if you went to America’s Tire, the ability to rotate in a spare depends on tread depth difference between that spare and rest of your tires.

Corporate policy, if there is one, is oversimplified with intent to allow most cover against legal liability; i.e. an attempt to be most fool-proof. A service advisor, who isn't knowledgeable or just not in the mood, may take the easy path and refuse; without taking any measurements.

Each SC and any tire shop will do it, if they are knowledgeable, and if all of your tread depths, including the spare, are within acceptable range. Generally, a difference of within 4/32 is considered acceptable.

Sadly, I would not recommend Discount Tire anymore - they seem to have become less focused on customers and more on their bottom line.

I'd used the DT in Colorado Springs for over 20 years and spent over $25,000 in tires with them. As they were installing the Nokian nAT tires on my Rivian, they damaged the wheel. Cosmetic yes, but the wheel was perfect prior to their work. At first, they tried to deny they did it. Then they admitted they probably didn't have one of the guards on when removing the tire. They sent me to their insurance who was terrible to work with - only wanted to repair (while admitting they couldn't match surrounding area perfectly), poor communication (and sometimes completely ignoring emails) and complete lack of customer focus.

I get that mistakes happen - but what sets the best apart is how they handle those mistakes. DT failed spectacularly in that area. If you're in Colorado Springs and need a tire place I'll happily send my new recommendation your way. We've already put tires on both of our other cars (another $2,500 out of DT's pockets) with them and when the nATs need to be replaced, it's where I'll be going.

I've had good luck with Discount Tire for all my cars. They balanced my Atomic Wheels AW01/Goodyear Territory AT combo very well. It has been smooth as butta all the way to the speed limiter from the start, and now going on 4k miles on them.

The tire certs are definitely worth it in my book. The crappy roads took out a brand new tire on one of my Teslas and that alone paid for the certs for the entire car and almost another car.
I was in the same boat for years. It's when you have an issue that they won't stand by their work. Bummer.

FYI: Costco now carries the Pirelli OEM tires, comes with free rotation, and 5yr road hazard which is funny since I only get about 1.5 years per a set!
